Pundits pushing for a win total that secures Luke as HC

I have seen quite a few posts regarding if Luke wins "X" number of games he will have earned the HC title.
Here are my thoughts fwiw:
Matt Luke got this job by default.  Otherwise he would never even be considered for the HC at Ole Miss or any SEC school at this point in his coaching career.  That coupled with the fact he has had no credible HC offers elsewhere speaks volumes.
Matt is a great Rebel but what Ole Miss needs is a great Head Coach which we will go out and hire in the offseason to get our program back on track.  Hopefully Matt ends up on the staff in some capacity much like Luke Fickell did at Ohio State.  If you look closely their coaching paths are very similar.  Fickell is now the HC at Cincinnati but served 4 seasons post his interim HC season as co-DC at Ohio State.
To sum there isn't a number that makes Matt Luke eligible to be our next HC.  He isn't qualified now and won't be at season's end.  Simple as that.
Now if our Admin makes the move to name him our next HC we can all agree at that time the fix was in place January 2017.

Re: Pundits pushing for a win total that secures Luke as HC

Luke is in like Flint.  If he has a mediocre season and Ole Miss is hit with NCAA sanctions, most likely no one will want the HC job at Ole Miss, so Luke will remain as HC.  After he reaches a 6-6 season, he will be heralded as having made good accomplishments with the hand that he was dealt.  When he reaches another 6-6 or 5-7 season, he will justify it will excuses.

Luke was considered for the HC position at Troy, but he knew that he had it made in Oxford.  With deep connections to the GOB, Luke could be a fair coach and still keep his job while making a big salary.  At times he seems lazy and does not appear to keenly develop the talent in his cupboard and recently he was unable to keep some of the commitments who left when Freeze resigned.  Generally it takes a keg of dynamite under his ass in order to get him to produce good results.

Most of the GOB like Luke.  Since he is an Ole Miss product and wants to be at Ole Miss, then he gets a big nod from the GOB.  We can only hope that Luke is a dark horse who will emerge as a great coach, but the odds are very low for that to happen.  Maybe Luke will prove naysayers wrong.  Regardless, Ole Miss is stuck in mediocrity and will probably remain there for the next 50 years until a true group of winners is put in the Athletic Department.  Since the next generation is millennials, that will not happen, but they can lobby for everyone to get a trophy in every sport, not matter what the results!!!

He is going to be pushed through by the establishment like the bear mascot whether anyone likes it or not. He may be a good head coach. But I just don't think we little people have a voice in who it will be. Tom Allen looked mighty good last night.

Until we know how severe the NCAA sanctions are gonna be, no established HC is gonna want to take the job.

That information will be discussed and vetted by their agents and we will have plenty of interest in the opening if we truly open it up.  One of our biggest failures at Ole Miss is the inability or total lack of effort to look outside of the Grove for leaders, coaches, etc.

Re: Pundits pushing for a win total that secures Luke as HC

Leaving aside Like's future at our possible HC, I'm interested to see how the team does this season. I'm talking more about intangibles than wins. Freeze did not put the team through enough physical practices, and that showed sometimes in games. Luke has installed more physical practices. Also, Freeze tended to micromanage his assistants at times, sometimes with bad results. (Remember pulling the starting QB and putting in some goal line package where everybody in the stadium knew exactly what was coming next?) The word is that Luke was no fan of Freeze's micromanaging and has told his coordinators that they will be running their respective shows. I don't know if all of this will pay dividends on the field, but we'll see starting September 2.

I think Luke will totally let the coordinators run things.  How else can he separate himself from the ownership of that units failures?  Hell he has hid behind offensive line failures for how many years with a myriad of excuses but the end results were always the same.  Like I said before at least with him being promoted to interim HC we were able to hire an offensive line coach that might make an improvement.

Re: Pundits pushing for a win total that secures Luke as HC

We need a real head coach and not another project regardless of the NCAA situation. I'd love to see Mike Norvell come in and take the reigns. The only way I would even personally consider Luke as an option is if he went undefeated. That is not going to happen.

This is my checklist:
- No fired coaches from big programs (Charlie Strong, Les Miles, etc.)
- No Prima donnas (Bobby Petrino...)
- No "up and comer" type coordinators (Like we had with Cutcliffe, UGA has with Kirby Smart)
- Needs to be a current HC
- Needs to show record of winning games he should plus beating some he shouldn't

Re: Pundits pushing for a win total that secures Luke as HC

Ole Miss' offense is loaded and the new OC I believe is a good one and if Patterson is as good as everyone thinks at QB and has a great year then the Rebels will score a lot of points.  From what I am hearing and reading the Defense will be better than last year.  I think the question is...will the new coaches, including Luke be able to keep the team motivated with all of the NCAA crap going on around them.  If so I think Ole Miss will win 7 or 8 including beating the Dogs in their house.
