Ole Miss offers Pearl star Tylan Knight, livening up his recruitment

Ole Miss offers Pearl star Tylan Knight, livening up his recruitment

When Tylan Knight read a 247Sports report in early January saying Ole Miss was giving him a closer look, he tried not to act too excited.

But his brother said the former Pearl football star went to Wal-Mart shortly after and bought himself an Ole Miss hat to wear around town. So the fact Knight tweeted Thursday night he received an offer from the Rebels could mean more intrigue in the Louisiana commit's recruitment.

After not being highly recruited until he led Pearl to the 6A state championship, Knight has slowly but surely gained steam with FBS programs.

Louisiana and South Alabama offered in December before South Alabama rescinded the offer. Ole Miss and Southern Miss started showing more interest in January, but after no offer came Knight committed to Louisiana Jan. 23.

Ole Miss offering a scholarship, though, seems likely to change things.

Pearl coach John Perry said in January that Ole Miss loved everything from Knight when they watched the tape on him. The issue, as it has been with most programs, is Knight's 5-foot-7, 170-pound body.

“Ole Miss, I think they’re just trying to find —  where does he fit on the field," Perry said then.

Both Perry and Knight's older brother, Darius, who also coaches at Pearl, said Ole Miss was a place Knight would love to go if it worked out. Darius Knight said much of it comes down to Knight wanting to play at the highest level, which Ole Miss and SEC football would provide.

“I think he thinks he can play at any level, so I think he wants to play at the highest level," Darius Knight said.

Tylan Knight downplayed much of his desires throughout the recruiting process. He never actually said the words "Ole Miss" once when the Clarion Ledger sat down with him last month. He usually just tiptoed around the schools that weren't offering, saying he will simply prove himself wherever he ends up.

He said some of those bigger state schools would call him a baller and say they liked his film, but it continued to seem like his size would hold them back.

But Knight received that offer he's been waiting for on Thursday, and he will be visiting Oxford this weekend.

Re: Ole Miss offers Pearl star Tylan Knight, livening up his recruitment

Glad OM offered this kid. He is one of those kids that OM needs to sign in this class.  Miss HS coaches will love they offered him and he could end up a heck of a special teams guy, punt returner, etc. Going to be tough to be a stud SEC corner at 5'7, he does weigh 170 though'. OM did have some pretty good one's  in Senquez Golson and Mike Hilton and they were both about 5'8" ( I know they were listed at 5'9", BUT

Amazing how different Golson and Hiltons careers have gone.   Golson a high draft pick and now out of the NFl and trying to catch on after a bunch of injuries.  Hilton not drafter , signed as a free agent, cut 2 times and now playing for the Steelers, the team that drafter Golson.

Little note on the 2
He signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers on January 24, 2017.[16] He reunited with his former teammate Senquez Golson whom he played with and backed up at Ole Miss.Hilton entered training camp competing with William Gay and Senquez Golson for the job as the starting nickelback. Hilton was named the starting nickelback to begin the regular season.[17]He made his regular season debut during the Steelers' 21–18 season-opening victory over the Cleveland Browns and finished the game with two combined tackles. The following week, he earned his first career start and collected nine combined tackles during a 26–9 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. On October 1, 2017, Hilton made four solo tackles, earned his first career sack, and made his first career interception off of Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco during the Steelers' 26–9 victory.[18] On November 16, 2017, he made his second start of the season and recorded six combined tackles and intercepted a pass by Marcus Mariota In their 40–17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Thursday Night Football. In Week 16 on December 25, 2017, Hilton recorded six solo tackles and three sacks on Houston Texans' quarterbacks T. J. Yates and Taylor Heinicke during the Steelers' 34-6 victory, earning him AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Does opening up a scholarship for someone like Knight seem to say that our late hour recruiting is losing steam or do we really need him?
