OT - XFL

Anyone else hoping the XFL does come back? Seems that all of the speculation is an announcement could be made as early as January 25th. If it does come back, I'm hoping they are certain of what they want to be and what their rules will be. It would be great to have an alternative league/season of football to watch.

While ratings were poor (and I think that was because people weren't sure what the XFL would be), it did have some cool things. The use of the skycam was probably the biggest one. The NFL had used a skycam a few times, but the XFL used it a ton and the NFL (and even college football) recognized how awesome using it that much was and began doing so. Alot of the games were fun to watch - yeah, there were some bad ones, but overall, it was fun and I hated seeing ESPN bash it at every possible chance they could get. So, I think they'd need to align themselves with ESPN a bit more to get more favorable coverage (perception is reality, right?).

I was working for a software company that did a lot of business with casinos when the XFL was around, and people in Las Vegas loved it. They did really well in ticket sales and really supported their team. And that's an area the XFL needs to really think about. They shouldn't put teams in cities with NFL teams - that is just dumb. They need large TV markets without any NFL teams in them.

I know, this post is me just rambling with thoughts...just think it would be nice to have an alternative to the NFL and a way to watch some kids that can't make it in the NFL being able to play pro football in another league (not Canadian).

Re: OT - XFL

I agree about the cities with no NFL team, however you mentioned Las Vegas. The Raiders are moving to Las Vegas and have hired John Gruden as their coach. I always thought that MLS's (soccer) biggest fault was that they put teams in cities that already have too much competition. If they were in Memphis, Birmingham, OKC, San Antonio, etc. they would have a lot more focus and probably be more successful. That is the approach that the XFL should take. Don't go after cities that already have something, go to the ones that don't.

These should definitely be on the list:

Salt Lake City
Memphis
Portland, OR
San Antonio
Birmingham
Orlando
OKC
