Ole Miss Considers Morris Buttermaker for Pitching Coach Position
Oxford, MS – The Ole Miss baseball program is currently in talks with Morris Buttermaker to potentially fill the role of pitching coach for the Ole Miss Rebels. Buttermaker, known for his colorful past as an alcoholic pool cleaner and former minor-league baseball pitcher, gained notoriety for his unconventional coaching stint with the Bears, a youth baseball team of misfit players.
Buttermaker's journey to coaching infamy began when he accepted an under-the-table cash payment from a lawyer to coach his son's youth baseball expansion team, the Bears. This team was created as part of a legal settlement after being excluded from other teams in the league. Comprised of players shunned by more competitive teams, the Bears were the ultimate underdogs in the Southern California youth baseball scene.
Despite his questionable methods, which included little effort to improve the boys' skills beyond securing a sponsor for uniforms, Buttermaker's approach to coaching has been described as refreshingly unconventional. His tenure with the Bears began with a rocky start, forfeiting their first game after allowing 26 runs without recording an out. However, it was his ability to embrace the team's outsider status and bring a unique brand of levity to the sport that left a lasting impression.
Ole Miss Athletic Director, Keith Carter, expressed excitement about the potential hire. "Morris Buttermaker's history may be unconventional, but his experience with the Bears shows he can bring a new perspective to our pitching staff. We're looking for someone who can inspire our players and inject a sense of fun and resilience into our program, and Buttermaker just might be that person."
Buttermaker's potential appointment is already generating buzz among fans and the baseball community alike. Known for his laid-back demeanor and unorthodox coaching techniques, Buttermaker's presence could signal a new era of innovative and spirited coaching at Ole Miss.
While some may raise eyebrows at his past, Ole Miss believes that Buttermaker's unique background could be precisely what the Rebels need to shake things up and bring a fresh approach to their baseball program.
