Ole Miss hires former MTSU record-setting QB asst. Brent Stockstill

Ole Miss has made some big-time hires since the 2023 season ended with a Peach Bowl win and 11 wins. But, there has also been some attrition. Derrick Nix left for Auburn. John David Baker left for East Carolina. And several analysts have moved on to promotions. Nevertheless, Lane Kiffin continues to make big-time hires and a familiar name is set to be working with him again. Former record-setting Middle Tennessee quarterback and coach, Brent Stockstill, has been hired by the Rebels.

A source close to Stockstill confirmed the hire was made “a few weeks ago” after he was not retained by new MTSU head coach, Derek Mason.

Stockstill is already familiar with how Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr. operate. The three worked together at Florida Atlantic in 2019. He ended his career as Middle Tennessee’s record holder in passing yards (12,495), touchdown passes (106), 300-yard passing games (19), 400-yard passing games (3), passing yards per game (277.7), completions (1055) and attempts (1610).

After his playing career ended in 2018, Stockstill landed coaching positions at Florida Atlantic (2019) and South Florida (2020) before returning to his alma mater in 2021 as wide receivers coach. He was later promoted to quarterbacks coach in 2022 where he coached until the 2023 season.

Brent Stockstill was the face of athletics in Murfreesboro since his father, Rick, took over at MTSU in 2005.

Stockstill ended career ranked in the top 10 all-time in Conference USA history in touchdown passes, completions, attempts, passing yards, completion percentage and 300-yard passing games. As a senior, he finished the season ranked third nationally in completion percentage, ninth in completions per game, 13th in touchdown passes and 15th in passing yards.

He was then named first team All-Conference USA and league MVP. Stockstill was a star quarterback at local Siegel (Tenn.), leading the Stars to the 2012 Class 6A state semifinals. As a senior he finished with 3,343 total yards and 42 total touchdowns and was a Mr. Football finalist.

Brent Stockstill was a part of the 11-win team at FAU with Lane Kiffin in 2019.

The offense was as electric as any in the country with Chris Robison under center. The former Oklahoma signee threw for 3,701 yards and 28 touchdowns. Malcolm Davidson and Larry McCammon III combined to run for 1,000+ yards and 16 touchdowns. Harrison Bryant eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark as well, hauling in 65 receptions and scoring seven touchdowns himself. He was later drafted in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Owls dominated UAB in the Conference USA championship game, 49-6, and won the Boca Raton Bowl versus a really good SMU team, 52-28.

Re: Ole Miss hires former MTSU record-setting QB asst. Brent Stockstill

The biggest joke in that article is that Derek Mason got a HCing job again. I know it’s Vanderbilt, but he took over a program that James Franklin left after back to back 9 win seasons having a winning record in the SEC those two seasons going 9-7.

Mason ran that program into the toilet fast going 3-9 year 1 and 0-8 in the SEC. He was there 7 years and went 10-46 in the SEC.  I mean, nobody gets 7 years these days with the failure of his first 6. Zero winning seasons in those 7 years.

I understand why he was hired, hut Jesus Christ, so many other deserving minorities that if thst is your criteria that should have been given a shot.

Wonder who gets blamed after 5 terrible years there.

Stockstill took MTSU to TEN bowl games in 18 years.  Unreal for that place. They had never been to a bowl game in the previous 7 years when they moved up to D1 from 1-AA

But Derek Mason is your answer.

Imagine you are a booster of MTSU and the hiring committee and AD send you a email that you have fired Stockstill.  You probably think, ok, Rick gave us 18 good years, established us as a solid D1 program, but lets go get a coach that can take us to the next level.  A young up and coming guy full of energy and someone to bring a young staff.

You get the next email saying that the new guy is Derek Mason. 54 years old and complete disaster as a HC. Brings with him a 55 yr old DC that was last coaching in the XFL, a OC from 1-AA Northern Iowa

I could go on and on, but what a junk hire. lol
