I’m really considering - now more than ever - leaving North Mississippi and relocating (to get away from Memphis) - North Carolina is where I’m thinking, in part because there are options—- Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Asheville, Durham…
Of course with the housing market and interest rates what they are, it’s not a good time to think too hard about it — but it’ll probably be year after next anyway.
Just wondering if anyone has any experience with any areas of the state — probably not the coastal side..not a beach guy. I am going to spend some time in Winston-Salem next year when Ole Miss plays at Wake Forest

Texas is nice. No state income tax.
North Carolina is 5.25%

I don’t think I’d like Texas summers very much..

Not a large city area, but Murphy, NC is nice. Beautiful mountainous area, close to Cherokee, NC, and Blue Ridge and Ellijay, GA. Very picturesque region with somewhat more pleasant summer temps (not this week, however).

Probably could buy a nice a/c unit for the savings on income tax and the savings on heating your home during the winter.
Just sayin…

Texas has no grocery tax either, if I remember correctly. Cries at 7% grocery tax in MS (highest in the nation)....

We have spent a lot of time in Western NC. It is very nice and a good place to live. Asheville is the largest city in that part of NC and offers lots of amenities. Waynesville is another nice area. Recently many people from Florida are discovering Western NC and moving there to get away from the FL heat. Other West NC areas to consider are as follows:
- The Highlands
- Cashiers
- Lake Lure
- Sylvia
- Bryson City
- Brevard
- Franklin
- Lake Toxaway
- Murphy
I cannot tell you much about cities like Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, or Durham, but we get lots of people at our Pickleball Camp in Montreat who are from there. They all seem to like the areas. I have been to Charlotte a few times. It's a big metropolis with lots of offerings, but I have not spent enough time there, except for airport drop off and pick up, to give a good opinion. Western NC is just more appealing to me in the overall picture of NC, but the state of NC does have a lot to offer.
Unfortunately, Memphis has lost its appeal. Things really began changing for the worse in the 90s when Herrington was elected mayor. From that point, Memphis really went downhill. I moved from Memphis in 2001 and have never looked back. Now Memphis is an undesirable place to live with high crime and political turmoil. When you flee from Memphis, you will probably wonder why you did not do it sooner.

I’ve never posted here before, but I read, and all of you are excellent posters. Very levelheaded!
I live in Winston Salem.

Thanks for posting and keep on posting. We have a good board here. It's a small tight-nitch group that has been together for years. We welcome your posts!

How long have you been there? Is it a good area overall? I’m a single guy so not looking for a whole lot for kids - but the more family friendly an area is, it’s usually a good sign. I’m looking forward to visiting next year — May drive up rather than fly and pass through Asheville on the way.
On another note - welcome! I like this board because it’s smaller in membership and we’re all civil here.
