Re: Good writeup on the Grove Bowl

Ulysses Bentley IV impresses in Ole Miss spring game, leads to Lane Kiffin shot at Snoop Conner Ulysses Bentley IV is already making a big impact on the Ole Miss Rebels offense. Ole Miss added Bentley through the transfer portal this offseason after he played the first three years of his collegiate career at SMU. In the Rebels spring game on Saturday, Bentley didn’t wait long to put on a display showing off his ability as an offensive weapon.

In the first quarter of the spring game, red team quarterback Luke Altmyer rolled out to his right and found Bentley out of the backfield by the right sideline. The play began at the 45-yard line, and it looked to be a broken play even after Bentley hauled in the reception. But he instead eluded the two blue team defenders before cutting up the field, dashing up into the five and nearly scoring. The play officially went down as a 42-yard gain for Bentley.

Bentley took the next handoff to his left, rolling into the end zone for an easy score to extend the red team’s lead.

Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin had hilarious exchange with Snoop Conner after Bentley’s touchdownFollowing Bentley’s impressive drive, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin had a hilarious moment with former Rebels running back Snoop Conner, who is now preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft.

“I did, yeah,” Kiffin said. “I’m trying to get him to go work out harder later today, get ready for the draft and motivate him.”

Ultimately, Kiffin would like it if Bentley turned into a weapon similar to Conner for Ole Miss. And when looking at TCU transfer addition Zach Evans, he sees a lot of former Ole Miss running back Jerrion Ealy.

“I would like that,” said Kiffin.

“They’re a little bit different. He’s probably a little bit more like Snoop. Ealy is really long, speed, which really Zach’s got more of a track., long speed background. So between all of them, that would be really good.”

Lane Kiffin weighs in on performance of Michael Trigg in Grove Bowl
Ole Miss was already excited to see Michael Trigg catching passes for the Rebels, but his performance in the Grove Bowl on Saturday heightened expectations even higher. The former USC tight end who joined Ole Miss via the transfer portal this off-season caught two touchdowns, lending credence to the idea that he could break out in a big way for the Rebels.

Afterwards, Lane Kiffin weighed in on the performance of Trigg in his first Grove Bowl.

“He’s kind of done that all camp,” Kiffin stated, assessing Trigg’s impressive performance. “He’s just very unique. Ball skills, catching range. Basically, what you saw today, he’s done whenever he’s been healthy.”

The tight end was ranked as the No. 38 overall prospect in the portal, per On3’s transfer portal rankings. He was also the second-ranked tight end available.

The 6-foot-3, 230-pound freshman played in just four games last season with the Trojans, totaling seven catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in 2021. He originally committed to USC as a four-star recruit, and the No. 4 tight end according to On3 Consensus, a complete and equally weighted industry-generated average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. Other than USC, he held offers from several big-time programs, including AlabamaGeorgia and Ohio State.

It’s easy to see why Ole Miss believes they have a star on their hands in Michael Trigg. Saturday was the first step in a breakout season for the tight end.

Lane Kiffin gives blunt assessment of Jaxson Dart performance following Grove BowlFurthermore, Jaxson Dart was one of the more intriguing names to find a new home this offseason, courtesy of the transfer portal. Dart left the West Coast lifestyle at USC for life in the South with the Ole Miss Rebels. After going through the Rebels spring ball program with head coach Lane Kiffin, fans got to finally see him in action at his new home.

Afterwards, Kiffin gave a brutally honest assessment of Dart’s performance in the first and second half of the Ole Miss spring game Saturday night.

“Yeah, not a very good first half,” said Kiffin on Dart’s play to open the spring game. “Thought he was trying to win the job instead of just playing quarterback and forcing balls and not being very consistent. So just talk to him before the half. You know, about calming down and taking one play at a time. And I thought he did some better things in the second half.”

In his first outing for Ole Miss, Dart struggled to find any consistency. The former USC Trojans quarterback completed 11 of his 30 passing attempts for 166 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The only good news or silver lining for Dart is his direct competition for the starting quarterback spot, Luke Altmyer, did not look much better. In fact, the lone bright spot for the Rebels’ quarterback room was Kinkead Dent, who went 11 or 12 for 140 yards and two touchdowns in the spring game.

LOOK: Michael Trigg scores multiple touchdowns at spring game

Ole Miss fans got a special treat during Saturday’s spring game between the Red team and Navy team as USC transfer tight end Michael Trigg scored a pair of touchdown. The late scores was not enough to lift the Navy team to victory but provided a glimpse of the future at the position.
In addition to two touchdown catches, Michael Trigg also added two two-point conversions to his tally with the kicker rarely seen during the Ole Miss spring game.

The Rebels social media team took advantage of the big plays by posting pictures on Twitter. “Trigg TD’s … get used to it,” the caption read.

The tight end is ranked as the No. 38 overall prospect in the portal, per On3’s transfer portal rankings. He is also the second-ranked tight end available.

Lane Kiffin on quarterback battleDuring his second interview of the day, Lane Kiffin spoke abut the quarterback battle, making it clear which of the two players impressed him more in the first half.

“Jaxson is trying to win the battle every play and forcing the ball as you can see,” said Kiffin. “And Luke’s being patient and playing within the offense and playing better as you can see. … That penalty should’ve been on him, not the other way. I’m sure that’s his frustration for forcing the ball into double coverage. He’s competitive, he’s frustrated.”

The penalty Kiffin referenced came on a play where Dart threw an interception and decided to run down field to make a hit, despite his white non-contact jersey. The play also brought another viral moment as a sideline coach nearly got ejected for his argument against the call.

Re: Good writeup on the Grove Bowl

Give Jaxson a few months to get caught up with the program and Ole Miss / Mississippi culture. I imagine he's had a lot of things in his short time here to process. It will take him a little while but I look for great things from him.
