Lane Kiffin updates status of QB Matt Corral, WRs Dontario Drummond and Braylon Sanders

OXFORD — The injury situation is going from bad to worse for Ole Miss football.

No. 15 Ole Miss (6-2, 3-2 SEC) is about as banged up as it can be on offense. Quarterback Matt Corral didn't practice Monday, according to coach Lane Kiffin, as he recovers from an ankle injury that's been bothering him for three weeks and knocked him out of the game for part of the first half of Saturday's 31-20 loss at Auburn.

Kiffin didn't give any indication that Corral won't be able to play against  Liberty (7-2) on Saturday (11 a.m., SEC Network). But the rest of Ole Miss' offense is a shell of its opening-day self. Guard Ben Brown is out for the season. Fellow offensive linemen Caleb Warren and Orlando Umana have been dealing with injuries. Tight end Chase Rogers has missed the last three games.

The receiving situation is worse than anywhere else. Jonathan Mingo hasn't played since September. Braylon Sanders injured himself early against Tennessee on Oct. 16 and hasn't caught a pass since. Dontario Drummond joined the injured list against Auburn, favoring an injured hamstring.

Now none of the three receivers Kiffin called the best trio in the country are completely healthy and all three could miss the game against Liberty.

"If we were playing today, we're in a worse position than we've been yet," Kiffin said. "None of the three receivers are available."

Sanders and Drummond both tried playing through injuries against Auburn. Kiffin said Sanders was a game-time decision but he decided to keep Sanders out after Sanders told him he could only break in one direction and would be limited moving the other way. Drummond's return to the game after limping off was only to run a trick play Kiffin was convinced couldn't further injure him.

Without the trio of upperclassmen receivers and Rogers, Corral had to primarily target walk-on receiver Jahcour Pearson and walk-on tight end Casey Kelly to lead the offense.

The question of Corral's health will linger through the week as he works through the injury, but Kiffin is at least assured the situation isn't as bad as he first suspected.

"He did not do anything today," Kiffin said. "I was surprised he came back. It looked like it was really bad obviously when it happened, like season-ending broken. That's how he felt. Obviously it wasn't so he was able to come back in. He's been very hard on himself over the last day-and-a-half."

With Freeze coming into town, you better believe that we are gonna have to figure out a way to put up points. We should be able to run the ball pretty well against them, but I'm worries that if we get behind then it'll be incredibly hard to stay in a shoot out.
