Ole Miss lost to Auburn last night in a game where the Rebels seemed flat and are probably exhausted from the last three weeks of play. The team has been hit hard by the injury bug and Rebel fans got a scare when star QB, Matt Corral, was injured and appeared to be out of the game. Altmeyer came in for a few snaps and took some licks, but performed decently. Ole Miss lost its chance to score on some urnovers but were stopped by the Auburn defense. People will question why Kffin did not elect to kick a FG, but if he had either made the 1st down or a TD, then that question would not be asked.
The Ole Miss defense played better and showed some improvement, but just could not stop Bigsby or contain Nix. Auburn's defense did a good job of reading the Ole Miss offense and keeping the Rebels from making too many big plays. By the end of the game, Ole Miss could not overcome the 28 points Auburn scored in the first half. Once again penalties plagued Ole Miss, but then you are at Auburn so there will be some phantom flags against the visiting team.
This loss drops the Rebels to 4th in the SECW and 13th in the top 25. The remaining schedule is vs. Liberty, vs TAMU, vs Vanderbilt, and @ Miss. State, and possibly at best the Rebels should go 3-1 with this group. Liberty will be an interesting game with the return of Hugh Freeze. It would be good to see Ole Miss handle Liberty early in the game in order to get rest for the starters and playing time for the backups.
TAMU will be an intersting game. The Aggies have a stingy defense and Jimbo Fisher has done a good job recrutigin in order to fill needs. This team beat Alabama during the regular season, so there is no doubt they will be ready to play.
Vanderbilit is always an interesting game for the REbels, but Ole MIss should put the Commodores out to sea early. If this is the scenario, then some backups oculd get playing time.
When it comes to Miss. State, throw out the record books and stats. You just hardly ever know who will win this game. The Bulldogs have the home team advantage, so you can be sure the stadium will be loud. Ole Miss needs this win to top off their season in addition to helping with recruiting.
Overall, the Ole Miss Rebels have vastly improved from a few seasons ago. They now have a quality staff with coaches who are able to coach up the players. Kiffin is recreuting for needs and has done a good job filling the gaps. Unfortuatnley, the SEC scheduling group (thank you Larry Templeton) gave Ole Miss an open date at the beginning of the season. Mid-October is an optimal time for open dates. Now its time to move on to Liberty.

We’ve had open dates early in the season before — one year when Nutt was at Ole Miss, I think the bye was in week 2…it happens. It’d be great if all SEC teams had 2 byes a year — that happens every now and then depending on when the season starts and how the dates fall.
