Lane Kiffin lands contract bonus after Ole Miss beats LSU
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin earned a contract bonus with Saturday's 31-17 win over LSU. According to USA Today's Steve Berkowitz, Kiffin takes home a $50,000 for getting to bowl eligibility with six wins after beating one of his rivals. Last season, the Rebels won the Outback Bowl against Indiana and could land a New Year's Six bid in 2021 if they continue winning. Thus far, Kiffin has pocketed $150,000 in bonuses this season.
Ironically, Kiffin is widely-considered a top candidate to replace Ed Orgeron at LSU, one of two major job openings in college football with USC — one of Kiffin's former stops — being the other. The 46-year-old is one of the most prolific play-callers in the sport, and that’s one reason Geaux247’s Billy Embody has him atop his list for the Tigers.
“I think he’s somebody that’s obviously a proven play caller at a high level,” Embody said Tuesday on the College Football Daily podcast. “He’s got SEC experience at multiple stops. I don’t know if he’s going to be the guy by any means, but this program needs a boost of energy, even after Ed Orgeron. It needs to become cool again. It needs to have, in my opinion, a proven offensive coach at the helm. Somebody who has winning under his resume. He won at Alabama when he was an assistant there. I think Lane Kiffin would be a really good call for me there if I was the AD.
“I know some people aren’t going to agree with it, but we have Jimbo Fisher all over our Geaux247 board and he just beat Alabama. Most of the board is against Jimbo Fisher. He’s got a national championship, ties to Baton Rouge and all of those things. It’s not going to be an easy hire that is unifiably perfect in the eyes of the fans or anyone out there, but Lane Kiffin would probably be at the top of my list.”
Kiffin touched on the job speculation prior to Saturday's win over the Tigers.
"I don't know the details for all that stuff,” Kiffin said, via Geaux247. “Obviously, Ed did a great job there and won a national championship, so I'm not really sure what happened there as of late. It's crazy, because they just beat a really good Florida team, and I'm sure not a lot of people really gave him a chance after the Kentucky game. It shows that they have great players and can play really well, and they did that.”

I say if Kiffin goes to LSU, let's hire Jeff Lebby.

How is LSU even going to afford him? The school went bankrupt a couple of years ago. They are still paying Les Miles and Orgeron, plus they are paying a hefty sum for Orgeron's buyout. With their woke chancellor, I bet they go after a minority hire.

I wonder if Dion Sanders is hanging around Baton Rouge these days.

If you think LSU is strapped for money or possibly financially bankrupt, just remember that they have access to the Children's Hospital Funds also.

LSU has plenty of money and donors with really deep pockets. They know how to funnel money and manipulate the system. Coach O's buyout is a drop in the bucket for them, especially considering SEC money and donor funds. The removal of Coach O was backed by a group of donors, so who knows, they may foot the bill.

I really do hope we can hang onto Lane. I don't think the LSU situation is one he'd want to venture into. With the NCAA cloud hanging over their head, and see how they just fired Ed - I think he'd have reservations about going into that situation.

You can be assured that he can get inside information from Coach O. There may be a point in time where Kiffin does leave Ole Miss, but hopefully, he will maintain a roster of quality athletes and the current administration will realize the importance of making the right hire.
Not only does a good hire create a good income stream for Ole Miss, but it also creates a good income stream for both the Oxford community and the immediate area. Hopefully, Ole Miss has learned its lesson from dud hires like Matt Luke, who was not experienced enough to be an HC, or Houston Nutt, who simply quit coaching after two seasons, or Houston Nutt, who let his ego get in the way of coaching.
Right now things are good in Oxford. Kiffin has done a good job coaching, hiring quality staff, recruiting for needs, and now has Ole Miss in the top 10. Football is fun again and most Ole Miss fans really like that.

Everyone treats the bigger schools in the SEC as destination jobs. I don't believe that is true.
Tennessee - They haven't had a good coach in a very very long time. The previous couple of coaching searches were disasters. Nobody wanted the job. They seem to finally have a decent guy in Heupel (sp?).
Auburn - They settled on Malzahn. They settled on Harsin. Case closed.
LSU - They were turned down by Jimbo when they threw the bank at him, only to watch him end up at A&M.
Now, that being said, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida were able to get the coaches that they wanted but let's not forget that Alabama had to absolutely beg and pay Saban to go there.
Big schools are easier to recruit to but they also have the burden of a lot of rich alumni sticking their noses into things and big fanbases that are ready to fire them if they don't win every game that they coach.
