Diamond Rebels drop to #12

After losing their series to a top ranked Miss. State team, the Diamond Rebs slip to #12 in the polls.  Previously the Rebels were ranked #6.  The Rebels follow other SEC schools in the polls with Arkansas at #1, Vanderbilt at #2, Miss. State at #4, Tennessee at #6, and South Carolina at #11.

The Bianco led Rebel team just does not seem to be able to win the big games or series when it counts.  They lost series to top rated Florida (1-2), Arkansas (1-2), and Miss. State (1-2).  During the Arkansas and Miss. State series,
the Rebels had a game with the lead and gave up runs to lose the game.  The blown lead games would have given the Rebels the series win.

Wanna hear a frustrating part? Ole Miss leads the SEC in batting average in conference play. We are, however, 2nd to last in HR's. This team is a bunch of smaller guys that aren't power hitters.

Seems like we are missing one piece every single year.  If we have a complete pitching staff, we can't hit.  If we have good SP and can score some runs our bullpen is bad.

I wonder where Ole Miss is ranked at leaving men on base.

After doing some searching, I could not find college baseball stats for LOB, but I did find this about LOB:

LOB can be a very circumstantial statistic on a game-by-game basis.  But the best
teams are usually good at finding a way to get runners home once they've reached base.

How many times this year have we loaded the bases and gotten one or none out of it?   A lot I know because I've witnessed it.  We were pretty good at one time in regards to scoring with two outs.  Now, we can get men on with no outs and come up empty.

That about sums it up. So many times we've had a golden opportunity to put a game away, and then these kids see a breaking ball and it's almost like it's the first time in their entire life. Next thing you know, a couple of K's and a ground out, and the opportunity is over.

Watching this team, we strike out an absurd amount of times. Last night, Little Rock had some kid take the mound with an astronomical ERA and he ended up striking out the side by just throwing curve balls. What ever happened to teaching situational hitting? You got 2 strikes on ya - choke up on the bat, widen your stance, and put the ball in play. It's frustrating to see these kids not being taught basics like that.

Our bullpen continues to be a nightmare. I understand that Bianco was a catcher, but maybe - just maybe - hire a pitching coach that wasn't a catcher with someone that was actually a pitcher. Wes Burton is infuriating to see pitch. He gets up there on the mound, acts like he's demon possessed, has the worst mechanics I have seen, and can hardly throw any strikes. Why hasn't the pitching coach sat him down and worked on those mechanics and gotten him to calm the hell down on the mound?

Bianco needs to shake up his staff, badly, after this season.

1 out with the bases loaded, all we need is a fly ball to get a run in. What happens?  6 - 4 - 3 double play.

Most likely Bianco will do nothing with his staff.  He generally hires "yes" men who will jump when he says jump and micromanages ever aspect of his staff.  It is just frustrating to have a high ranking, have high expectations, start the seasons strong, only to have the bubble burst as the team enters SEC play showing they just cannot consistently compete with good competition.
