Probably cost less than extending it with lawyers. If the law work takes more money than a settlement, companies do a settlement. It's not an admission of guilt but rather a cost saving measure.
Some things are worth the price. Not giving in to a shakedown is more important to me than lawyer fees (even at 3X the price)....plus it makes us LOOK guilty (and yeah I understand it's not an admission of guilt) but it is basically the equivalent of never paying ransom for a terrorist kidnapping. All you do is encourage more of the same behavior.
But, I predicted we would cave....it's what we do!
I could not agree more... that's what I was getting to.

I really don't understand why we would have apologized, unless Nutt has something else on us. We know for a fact that the Sander's academic fraud took place under Houston Nutt. Therefore, I do not see why we should make any apology to him, as that was really the most serious charge in the first NOA, was it not?

I can sum it up in 1 word...."LAWYERS".... "Settle"....... It's what they do.
I once worked for a very wise man who told his staff...."Just because something is legal doesn't make it RIGHT, necessarily."

This was a tepid, generic apology that can mean anything or nothing. Nutt probably realized that he (and his future) were not being helped by this thing continuing to drag out. Also, supposedly Mars had been given a "warning" that his and Nutt's actions could be construed as extortion under Mississippi law, and Ole Miss was keeping open the option to pursue that. This was a good move to get this behind us without paying Nutt money. Perhaps it should have been done sooner, but maybe it wasn't possible until now. Nutt will likely look back on this and realize that his best interests were not served by Mars and getting involved with Rosebowl. Mars kept trying this in the media instead of court, and it backfired on Nutt. The whole thing could have been handled quicker, cleaner and with a lot less damage if Nutt had employed a savvy lawyer who knew how to negotiate these things under the radar and get results.

I thought about that....Nutt may have realized that he was killing any chance he had for EVER getting another job coaching.....what school would touch a guy they couldn't trust? Sort of like the same thing Kaper'punk' is finding out with the NFL avoiding him like the plague.
