Ole Miss vaults to the top spot in the rankings after an impressive 2-0 weekend at the State Farm Showdown. On Saturday, the Rebels won what became a bullpen game early on. They took a 4-3 lead after two innings, with starting pitcher Doug Nikhazy failing to get out of the second inning, and then held on thanks to some outstanding relief work, led by fifth-year senior righthander Taylor Broadway, who threw four scoreless innings with five strikeouts. In Sunday’s win over Texas Tech, righthander Gunnar Hoglund was up and down. He did give up three runs in 5.1 innings of work, but he also dominated at times by striking out 11 batters. Offensively, Ole Miss was quiet most of the day, but a five-run third inning, which including a two-run homer for shortstop Jacob Gonzalez, was enough to get the job done.

It's nice to be at the top.

Being on top so early in the season is tough. Everyone wants to beat you and you have a lot to lose if you do not win. It would be ideal to stay in the top 5-10 and then vault to the top later in the season. If the Rebels can hold the #1 spot through the end of the season that will be phenomenal. Today against Texas will be a big test to stay at #1. Texas has lost both of their games in the tournament and Ole Miss has won both of their games in the tournament. Rebels fans should enjoy the ride!!!
