The Ole Miss Spirit has learned that Marquise Watson has been promoted from graduate assistant to the position of player personnel analyst on head coach Lane Kiffin's football staff. Per sources, Watson finalized his new contract on Friday.
Sources told the Ole Miss Spirit that Watson declined overtures from several Group of Five schools and one SEC program this off-season in order to remain in Oxford. He spent last season as a defensive graduate assistant for the Rebels and was promoted to interim defensive line coach for Ole Miss' victory over Indiana in the Outback Bowl after former defensive line coach Deke Adams was relieved of his duties in December. It was speculated that Watson was being considered as a strong candidate to fill the vacant position before the Rebels' hired Randall Joyner from SMU.
The 25-year-old Watson is widely considered a rising star in the coaching profession. Watson was selected to the 247Sports 30-Under-30 last September indicative of the top 30 college football assistant coaches under the age of 30.
Here's what 247Sports said about Watson at the time of his selection: "Watson finished as Bryant’s all-time leading tackler when he graduated in 2017. Two years later, he’d ascended as the program’s d-line coach and run game coordinator. That’s after serving a stint as Amherst College’s running backs coach and as a GA at Rutgers. Now, Watson is at Ole Miss working under his former high school head coach Chris Partridge. He’s responsible for coaching the Rebels’ Buck linebackers."
Said an Ole Miss source: “He’s a really good young coach, and I’m excited about his career. He will be one of the next great Power Five coaches.”
