I've been thinking about yesterday's game and I thought I'd do a little homework to satisfy my curiosity as to just what the win over Vandy portends..... Despite all the back slapping and declarations of a new season something about that game didn't fit with all the kool aid flowing....
So.... I checked on Vandy's record and found that in their last 4 games (all losses) they have given up a total of 199 points.....That's basically an average of 50 points per game.
As revealing as that was the other side of the ball might tell a more foreboding story for us.
Vandy scored a total of 73 points in those 4 games....and almost half of those came against us. Their average score for the 4 games was 18 and change and doubled it against us.....They scored as follows: AL=0, FL=24, UGA=14, OM=35.....
Looks to me like we caught Vandy at just the right time in a downward spiral.... LSU, on the other hand, is ramping upwards.....and they can run the ball better than Vandy by a long shot.
I'm guessing they won't want to lose twice to a MS team so "O" will have them focused.....this could be ugly.

No doubt Johnny. While I enjoyed watching some of our guys look good yesterday, I kept telling myself it was Vandy. No reason to get excited. The positive from it was that how we have looked I really didn't think we would win an SEC game including Vandy. So, from that standpoint it was a pleasant surprise. But this was not the Vandy team that seemed to start the year, as they have been in a tailspin/funk since Bama thumped them. Glad our guys showed some spirit and acted like they really did want to play. But, that is tempered by knowing who it was. I see more thumpings in our future from LSU, A&M, and possibly the Leg Humpers as well. Not sure what to think about the Hawgs at this point.

I think that one will depend on if their QB is back and healthy or not....

We actually catch LSU at a really good time. They have played 2 very tough games back to back and then go on the road. I got really excited when I saw their next game after us is Bama but then I realized they have a bye after us.
Either way, we catch them at a good time. The problem is that their D should give us problems along the OL and they should be able to run at will on us.

I figure by tomorrow am most of us will have sobered up as to what really happened yesterday Johnny. Didn't Vandy also miss a couple of red zone scoring chances? 57-48 is even worse.

It may not have been pretty but a win is a win --- anyone remember how Vandy whipped us like a rented mule last year? I'll take an ugly win over any loss any day of the week....especially a season where wins will likely be scarce.
And we know for sure we won't suffer an 0-8 SEC mark this year.

I was pretty excited about getting the W. I had this one marked as a loss. And, after we fell behind, I started thinking about things to do around the house, but the kids came back and won in big fashion. The offense was clicking and the defense looked good in several areas.
Now is a really good test to see what this team can do against another school that has much better talent in LSU. LSU's gameplan is gonna be simple - line it up and run it down our throats. We're gonna have to be very efficient on offense, since I think our offensive possessions will be limited due to LSU looking to control the game clock.

I am not going to crap our the team and discount the win. It was nice to show life. the defense looked pretty strong 75% of the game. most importantly, they looked like they were attacking the ball, not just playing grab ass. As bad as the D looked, they were 100% better this weekend
But every year, how many times do we see a bad team get a win and turn around their season? Not talking championships or anything, just takes what looked to be a horrible season into a 7 win better than first thought kinda deal.
we have 1 solid win left on the schedule with LLU. We have 2 more winnable games with KY and Ark. Who knows what will happen with LSU, TAM or State. We could lose all 3 or we could split the games in other ways.
We want to do well. even if we win 8 games though, we need an established coach, not an interim. We want to win as many games as we can and appeal to as many recruits as possible. We need this team to look as sexy as possible for the best coach to want to come in and take over

Personally I don't want any coach that comes on board because of the talent we currently have. I want a coach who comes on board because of the foundation that exists with fans, boosters and admin to support building a championship program. Any coach worth his salt is going to bring his own system and will quickly tell you his system and the kids his staff recruits are why he's been successful. Not the other way around. Unless of course we repeat the same failed mistakes with Cut and Nutt. We need a visionary who pushes past established boundaries and perceptions. One thing Freeze did so well was challenge the perception and we saw amazing success as a result. We have the pieces of the puzzle to build a championship program. It can be done. What we need is a unifying HC that understands how to rally the troops, recruit his tail off finding the right kids for our systems and win the games you are supposed to win and challenge every other one.
This Vandy win is Fool's Gold if I have ever seen it. I'm amazed at how quickly our fans forget how bad this team and coaching staff is. They aren't getting better. They just simply played a team in more disarray than they are with less talent.
I'll be the first to admit I thought Vandy would run all over us and they did. I also thought they would pressure Shea every snap and they did. Fortunately we were able to hit some big plays and score more than they did.
Here is what you guys can expect Saturday against LSU. A repeat of the 2009 Egg Bowl ass kicking where State averaged like 8 minutes per possession and scored on almost all of them. Everyone is clamoring for jet sweeps. I'd bet right now LSU runs over a dozen of them against us for big yardage.
I'm not being negative. I'm being realistic. I do hope our kids continue to give great effort like they did Saturday but honestly when you are better than the guy across from you at every position effort can be disguised in the talent gap. We won't see that kind of talent gap again outside of ULL.
That said we are one day closer to first week of December and this shitshow can roll on out of here for good. Fingers crossed.
