Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze tests positive for COVID-19

Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze tests positive for COVID-19

On Friday morning, Liberty Football announced that head coach Hugh Freeze has tested positive for COVID-19. The Flames have been one of the biggest surprises in college football, owning a 9-1 record on the season.

This is Freeze’s second season as head coach of the Flames after coaching Ole Miss for five seasons from 2012-16. In his first season, Liberty finished 8-5.

During the 2020 season, Liberty was ranked as high as No. 21 in the country, their first-ever top-25 ranking. Liberty Football released a statement Friday morning detailing Freeze’s positive diagnosis.

“Liberty University Head Football Coach Hugh Freeze has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus,” the statement read. “He received the positive test result earlier this week and has experienced some mild symptoms. Since learning of the positive test result, Coach Freeze has self-isolated himself and he continues to follow all guidelines set forth by the Liberty University medical staff and local health officials. He looks forward to rejoining the team for bowl game preparation, next week.”

Freeze and Liberty agreed to a contract extension through 2026 on November 11, the school announced. ESPN reported the estimated annual salary will near $3 million, which puts him in the mid-tier of the average Power 5 head coach’s salary.

“I won’t even entertain things of that nature at this point,” Freeze told ESPN College GameDay's Gene Wojciechowski. “I’m at total peace with staying here, as long as they’ll have me.”

Freeze was previously the head coach at Ole Miss from 2012-2016, where the Rebels reached a pair of New Year's Six bowls under his watch, before resigning in Summer 2017 amid controversy within the program.

“There’s always that itch. Like man, I want to prove it, I want to go do it and I want to do it in that biggest arena that I can,” Freeze went on to say when asked if he has the desire to return to a Power 5 program. “So, yeah, I’m made that way.”

Re: Liberty head coach Hugh Freeze tests positive for COVID-19

He will be fine just like the near 100% of everyone else that tests positive.
