South Carolina hires Shane Beamer as next coach to lead Gamecocks football program
The 43-year-old Beamer previously worked at South Carolina under former Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier
South Carolina officially announced on Sunday that Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer will be its next football coach, succeeding Will Muschamp who was fired after a 2-5 start this season. Beamer is the son of legendary former Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer and worked as an assistant for the Gamecocks from 2007 to 2010 under Steve Spurrier.
"I believe that Shane Beamer is the perfect fit to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina," South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said in a press release announcing the hire. "He has worked under some of the greatest coaches in college football and has taken those lessons to become one of the bright, young minds in the game. I believe Shane's energy, enthusiasm, commitment and fondness for our school and program will be met favorably by our student-athletes, staff and fans."
Beamer has never been a head coach but has worked at Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Mississippi State, Virginia Tech and Georgia in addition to his stints as an assistant at South Carolina and Oklahoma. Most recently, he's been serving as an assistant head coach and tight ends coach for the Sooners. The 43-year-old was a walk-on player for his father at Virginia Tech from 1995 to 1999.
"I have been preparing for this moment my entire life," Beamer said. "I am ready and excited to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. I am thankful to all the head coaches that I have worked for, the assistant coaches and student-athletes I have worked with. My family and I are thrilled to be coming back to Columbia and the state of South Carolina."
Beamer was not on the field during Oklahoma's 27-14 win over Baylor on Saturday as the Sooners clinched their spot in the Big 12 Championship Game. No official reason was given for the absence, though it was believed to be related to COVID-19.
Muschamp went 28-30 (17-22 SEC) in nearly five full seasons with the program. Among the other names to be connected to the job were Louisiana's Billy Napier, who issued a statement that he is staying with the Ragin' Cajuns, and Louisville coach Scott Satterfield.

Shane could have stayed at Va Tech as a asst. He chose to go try and be a HC elsewhere. The pressure to replace his dad would have been too much. He had talks to be the HC and if he truly wanted the job, he would have had it.
He did a great job at SC as a asst. a recruiting beast. SC is not the easiest place to recruit to. His connections in SC’s recruiting blueprint area are great.
I think its as good of a hire as they could expect from the asst pool.
As for current HCs. Not big on and other than Jamie Chadwell. He is instate and knows the landscape. Has worked his way up from HC in D2 to D1.
Hope he is smart enough to stay away from the Vandy situation. He will have better options.
Beamer is a good hire for SC
