You can beat people with scheme on the offensive side of the ball. Can do that rather quickly with a offensive mind like Lane.
Defensively you have to have the studs, got to have superior athletes. As stated, the couple of classes Luke recruited did not sign high end defensive people. Those would be your soph and jr guys leading your defense.
The 2018 class the highes ranked defensive signee for OM was Cunningham as a DL, now a OL
2nd highest Ruggs as LB not on roster
3rd highest Dasher a JUCO LB not on roster
4th Jacques Jones on roster starter
5th Northern JUCO DL starter will be gone after this year
6th Hill DL on roster 5 tackles so far this year
7th White S not on roster
8th Hawkins CB 21 tackles
9th T. Tisdale JUCO DE rotation will be gone after this year
10 Bivens DT 2 tackles season
11th K.Smith CB starter 27 tackles
12th Hess LB now a TE
13th Knox 1 tackle
14th T. Knight CB roster undersized baller
out of that class of 14 defensive players
3-gone
2-moved to offense
2 JUCO guys that are SRs
3-not SEC caliber Hill, Bivens, Knox ( maybe S. Miss or other non power 5 kids)
So you have 4 of that class Hawkins, Smith, Knight and Jones that are players, I would say 2 are solid SEC front line players.
You can go thru the 2019 class also, but you get the idea
Some are worried about the coaching, I dont. I know how it is trying to make chicken salad with chicken sh**.
Just have to recruit like hell ad get some ballers.

Totally agree with ya Rock. It's going to take some recruiting cycles to fix the talent gap on the defensive side. We've seen Lane look for immediate help looking north of the border. He knows what's needed and he'll get it fixed.

I never understood why SC panicked at the end of the game. They went for it on 4th down in our territory, when they should have punted. Also they changed their game plan to passing when it was obvious we could not stop their running game. I was very happy with these decisions, but perplexed. Our passing D is not as bad as the running D.

On the SC game plan, it was perplexing for them to not run when they were having so much success running the ball, but I am very good with their decitions.
About defense, it just seems that none of the past coaches put a lot of emphasis on recruiting high caliber defensive players. It is hard to remember the last time Ole Miss signed a highly touted DL besides Nkimdiche. There have been some DLs who panned out and ended up doing well. The Rebels have an immediate need on the DL to get players who will bust through the line, make tackles in the backfield and continually disrupt plays.

It’s horrible - it’s got to be one of the all time worst that Ole Miss has ever had..fixing it has got to be Kiffin and Staff’s top priority.
We are currently at 120 in the nation. We were actually a little worse once... we were last! I agree with your point that it must be fixed!

Plumlee definitely needs to be on the field in some capacity. He has too much speed and is too good of an athlete to have to ride the pine.
While my head agrees with this and would love to see Plumlee on the field, my gut knows that being our only legitimate back up QB... you just can't! You can't risk injury to your back up. If Corral goes down, it's JRP's show to run.

You are right and this is not a factor I considered. To be effective you must have a strong QB running the offense.

Don't we have enough quality running backs without using Elisha Moore as a tailback? I will add that he is shifty and more elusive than any of the others.

We have not prioritized recruiting defense for years. I am not ready to give up on our DC's until they have a chance to recruit their own guys in.
I agree. The defensive players we have now are very slow off the edge and take bad angles. I understand the coaches have been working them on the angle problem, but it looks like they haven't yet got the hang of it. I'm not at all for getting rid of Durkin, etc. until they have had a chance with better talent.
