...an excerpt from a new Bruce Feldman book on Orgeron:

He worked his tail off and no one tried to help one bit. He was his own worst enemy at times but if I was in his shoes, I would be fine with it as well. Ole miss had been in the business of hiring new coaches while paying the last one

Still a bad look on Orgeron to badmouth a former employer — especially one that even gave him a head coaching job when he was nowhere near ready for such a job - and then he proved as much.

Orgeron was probably elated to get our from under the tyrannical rule of Pete Boobe. Ed knew his buyout was nice and he could ease back into a coaching job. He learned a lot along the way and now has a national championship to show for his efforts. Although he was highly successful last year, this year could be the one that finds him on the hot seat and out of Baton Rouge within the next couple of year. Regardless, Coach O is a coaching commodity and most likley will not have any problems seeking future employment.

Orgeron is sure getting his butt beat today. To a rather pedestrian Auburn team.

Disagree with both, he was just stating facts and he isnt worried about getting another job at this point in his life so speak the truth.
Easy for people to say he "wasn't ready" but if people are honest with themselves, they would not be able to answer that. When you have zero help from the administration, AD, faculty, asst coach salaries, you never know if he would have been "ready" if he would have just a little cooperation from any of those mentioned. He was basically thrown to the wolves alone and said, go get'em

Fair point - and the other side of the coin is there were many OM fans just has happy to see him go as he apparently was to be gone.
The reason I say he wasn’t ready is he had been a career position coach with no experience even as a coordinator at any level - and his teams were often poorly coached and poorly prepared. I will absolutely give him credit for the players he brought to Ole Miss but he was a terrible head coach.

Whether he was ready to be a game day coach or not could be up for debate. But he was ready to recruit at a high level from day 1. We have O to thank for our 2008 and 2009 cotton bowls bc of the talent he brought in. I was all in favor of giving him one more year. Who knows how he would have done with Snead at QB but I’m betting he would have started shown steady improvement in the win column every year.

Coach O proved that higher level athletes can be recruited to Ole Miss. His players were the ones that made Mutt successful and gave him back to back Cotton Bowls. His recruiting efforts were successful and there is no doubt that he knows how to recruit.
Pete Boobe was a tyrant as Orgeron's boss. He constantly cut the budget for recruiting, made the coaches miserable, and usually made the coaches use the smallest, lowest priced rental cars on their recruiting trips. Meanwhile, he took his family on Ole Miss trips and the school paid the bill in full. This includes his punk son who tried to run Jerrell Powe and other athletes out of the Ole Miss facility who were working out after they had graduated.

I was friends with the grandmother of a starting player under Orgeron. This lady, now deceased, was a typical Southern Belle who rarely criticized anyone. When she did, it was never in harsh language. She attended all the home games when her grandson played. Once I asked her about Orgeron. She said that she thought the man was “unbalanced.” I learned later that some parents (not the ones of this player) had complained to Boone and even Khayat that they had concerns about their sons playing for Orgeron. This was one contributing factor to Orgeron’s being fired.
