When to expect SEC to release dates for 10-game schedule
The Southeastern Conference will announce dates for its 10-game, conference-only schedule early next week, an industry source told 247Sports.
SEC head coaches are expected to learn Monday their Week 1 opponents, a person familiar with the process said, but it's not clear if the SEC will make a public announcement laying out the full slate of games by date on the same day. What is clear is the full, 10-game schedule will be released sometime early next week, but that exact day for the announcement is to be determined.
SEC teams open preseason camp Monday on their respective campuses.
The SEC released the two additional, cross-divisional games for each of its 14 institutions Aug. 7, but did not date games for the new schedule. The SEC football season is slated to begin Sept. 26.
The SEC has remained steady with its plans to play a college football season despite the Big Ten and Pac-12, along with all FCS conferences, postponing its fall seasons. The SEC released last week its medical protocols to protect players against the spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The global pandemic has placed college sporting events on hold since mid-March.
“Best advice I’ve received since COVID-19: ‘Be patient. Take time when making decisions. This is all new and you’ll gain better information each day,’” SEC commissioner Greg Sankey shared via Twitter last week. “SEC has been deliberate at each step since March…slowed return to practice…delayed 1st game to respect start of fall semester…(developed) testing protocols…We know concerns remain. We have never had a (football) season in a COVID-19 environment. Can we play? I don’t know. We haven’t stopped trying. We support, educate and care for student-athletes every day, and will continue to do so…every day.”
The ACC and Big 12 both opted to allow its institutions to schedule one non-conference game. The ACC will follow an 11-game schedule, with 10 conference games, with the first games beginning Sept. 10. The Big 12 will play nine conference games with one non-conference matchup for each school. Programs are busy scheduling and rescheduling non-conference opponents this week. Most Big 12 schools have set Sept. 12 as its non-conference date, with the nine-game conference season set to begin Sept. 26.
The ACC, Big 12 and SEC have set Dec. 12 or Dec. 19 as the tentative dates for their respective conference championship games, allowing flexibility in the schedule should there be COVID-19 outbreaks within their conferences.

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (August 16, 2020) - The Southeastern Conference will announce its 2020 football schedule on Monday at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT on a special show on the SEC Network.
SEC Now: Football Schedule Release Show Presented by Regions will air live on SEC Network at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT on Monday. Hosted by Dari Nowkhah with analysis by Greg McElroy, Roman Harper, Laura Rutledge, Kirk Herbstreit, Rece Davis and more, the show will break down the 2020 SEC football schedule in its entirety. Week 1 of the 2020 SEC football schedule will be revealed at 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT on The Paul Finebaum Show.
Last month, the SEC established September 26 as the new kickoff for its 2020 football season to allow its universities to focus on the healthy return of their campus communities and the gradual re-introduction of athletics, as the 14 members of the SEC continue to monitor developments related to COVID-19.
The 2020 SEC football season will be comprised of a 10-game Conference-only schedule and the SEC Football Championship Game is scheduled to be played December 19 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, rescheduled from the original date of December 5. The schedule will include one mid-season open date for each school and an open date on December 12 for all schools.
The decision to limit competition to Conference-only opponents and rescheduling the SEC Championship Game is based on the need for maximum flexibility in making any necessary scheduling adjustments while reacting to developments around the pandemic and continued advice from medical professionals.

I don't understand why they are keeping the schedule so close to the cuff. I don't see how that benefits anyone. Are we really going to find out our opponents 1 at a time? That seems strange.

Rest assured, whatever they do it will be to Alabama's advantage.
