Mississippi State coach Mike Leach signs contract for $5M per year with incentives
STARKVILLE – Mississippi State stretched its pocketbook to land Mike Leach.
The Bulldogs' new football coach signed a four-year contract worth $5 million per year in total base compensation, according to documents distributed by the university.
Leach becomes the highest-paid coach in Mississippi State history with the deal. Former football coach Dan Mullen made $4.5 million in base pay during his final season in Starkville in 2017, and Leach's predecessor, Joe Moorhead, made just over $3 million per year.
Leach's new contract also pays him more per year than he was making at Washington State. In December, Leach had signed a five-year, $20 million contract extension with Washington State.
Leach also has a pool of $4.7 million for his assistant coaches in Starkville. The university will also have to pay Leach a variety of performance incentives if he meets certain standards.
Here's a breakdown of incentives. First, Leach has incentives for individual accolades.
- He will make $50,000 if he's named the SEC Coach of the Year and $100,000 if he's named the National Coach of the Year.
Second, there are incentives for successful seasons in conference play.
- Leach will make $100,000 for an SEC Championship Game appearance.
- Leach will make $250,000 for winning the SEC Championship Game.
Third, there are several incentives for Leach to make it to the postseason.
- Leach will make $75,000 for participation in Birmingham, Las Vegas, Independence, or any other Tier 3 bowl game.
- Leach will make $100,000 for participation in The Taxslayer, Outback, Belk, Music City, Texas or Liberty bowls.
- Leach will make $150,000 for participation in the Citrus Bowl.
- Leach will make $200,000 for participation in any New Year's Six bowl game (Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta or Peach).
- Leach will make $400,000 for advancing to a CFP Semifinal game.
- Leach will make $500,000 for advancing to the National Championship Game.
- Leach will make $1,000,000 for winning the National Championship Game.

Moo U made a desperation move. They had been turned down by their prior coaching choices and finally found an out with paying Mike Leach a very high amount of money. Leach is a decent coach and will have some SEC wins plus upsets, but may not be continually consistent.
Leach got Moo U what they wanted. A big name coach who would give them media covreage like Ole Miss got when they hired Lane Kiffin. Moo U is simply a copy cat program that wants to be like big brother.
