Monday morning thoughts

Confession time - I turned off the game towards the end of the 3rd quarter. That is the first time I can remember doing that in such a long time. Normally, I would continue to watch as the players would continue to fight. This wasn't the case on Saturday night. Not only did the players quit, but the coaches completely gave up as well. On most days after a loss, I would think about what went wrong, what went right, and if the problems can be addressed.

Offense:
Longo was a ridiculous hire and should be fired. Frick you Freeze for hiring him in the first place! When Longo was first hired, I remember reading him bragging about only having 28 plays, but then after looking up game results, I saw where his offense got completely shut down when facing teams of equal or better talent. And that is what we're gonna be facing for the entire year with him. Also, did I read right that he said that he may simplify the offense?

Offensive line play continued to be a dumpster fire. Shea ran for his life the entire game (once again) behind a line that has managed to have gotten even worse than what we've seen previously.

Speaking of Shea, in the last two games, he's been sacked 10 times and thrown Pick 6's in each of those games. The kid has a ton of talent and potential, but he doesn't have a team around him. He has a bunch of individuals that simply don't care. Look no further than Lodge not giving a damn about that INT and just totally giving up.

I want to say kudos to Jordan Wilkins for rushing 101 against Alabama until I remember it wasn't all against their 1st string. But, I have always thought Wilkins has tried to run hard each time - he just can't ever find a hole 99% of the time with that sh*tty OL.

Defense:
I just don't know what to think. McGriff is working with considerably less talent on this side of the ball than what Longo has on offense. It's glaringly obvious that we do not have SEC talent on defense. Maybe we can now forget about the hype around Marquis Haynes, who didn't record a single stat against Alabama. We gave up 365 yards on the ground, 248 in the air, and 66 total points. And this wasn't all against Alabama's 1st string. Did I read correctly that the 66 points was the most Ole Miss has ever given up in program history?

Special Teams:
I hate the rugby punting crap.

Coaching:
Every single one of them should be fired. If Luke's fat ass had a backbone, Longo would be fired already. Luke should be fired as well, but who is gonna fire themselves, right? I saw a team come out and play scared (especially starting the 2nd half). I've witnessed players completely giving up in a game before - these are typically 18-22 year old kids we're talking about. But, watching coaches themselves quit halfway through a game is a first for me in my 41 years.

The game plan against Alabama was.......non existent. It looked like the plan might have been to just play fast on offense with tempo (which is what I wanted to see), but that was abandoned quickly. I'm not sure what the plan of attack was on either side of the ball. The OL never gave the receivers time to "find the open space" and Shea was getting hit constantly. The defense continues to be unable to pressure the QB or disrupt the LOS.

Say what you want, but Freeze's teams never sh*t the bed like this - and I bet if he was still HC and banging his prostitutes on the side, that the score how have been more respectable, and we sure as hell wouldn't have lost that Cal game.

Officiating:
Look, officiating didn't have any outcome on this game. Let's get that out of the way right now. But, I couldn't help but think that there was some sort of side bet or incentive for them to try to get a targeting call in against us. The two times they called targeting on the field, it wasn't even close. There had to be some sort of side bet/wager on Ole Miss getting called for targeting for those calls to be made.

Those are just my thoughts. We might win one more game this season if we're lucky.

All the more reason to have an EXPERIENCED DC.  I thought McGriff was a bad hire from the get go.  When you have no talent to begin with and you hire a position coach to be your DC you're asking for disaster.  An experienced DC might have a chance but a guy who's learning the DC through OJT just isn't going to have the ability to learn his new job AND coach up no talent players.....just too much to expect. I seem to recall he was a pretty good position coach when he was here before but that's a far cry from being a DC.  Plus I hear the Aubies are not unhappy that he is gone....

If "find the open space" worked you would see it in the NFL.....you don't.  They run precise routes and the QB throws to spots using timing.  This "find the open space" might work at the Junior College level where the DB's aren't athletic enough to stop it but in the SEC those DB's close ground FAST.  A receiver just standing there waiting on his 'open space' is likely to have his route jumped by the DB......That leads to the pick 6's we've seen....HELLO!

My thought on the targeting was that maybe they  were potentially helping Auburn by having our guys banned for a half this Saturday.  Otherwise the Turders didn't need any zebra help to dissect us.....

Re: Monday morning thoughts

Meridian, you are accurate in your assessment.

Defense:
The D gave away their hand on every play. If the linebacker ran up to the line, the Bama QB would wait a second and see if he backed off, if he did then pass coverage. If he didn't it was a blitz. It was comical. Also, our secondary was playing a really bad zone coverage and left a man open on most plays. McGriff is not good. These are schematic problems.

Offense:
Despite my other thread, kudos to Patterson. The kid was trying hard and playing the best he could without a team around him. I was very disappointed in our WRs. They are better than they played.
Kudos to Wilkins. He has some good runs. That was the best single game rusher that I have seen in a while at Ole Miss. He should get 90% of the snaps at RB. Commit to him there.

Special Teams:
Agreed on the rugby punt. If it only nets you 30 yards, let a real punter kick the thing.

Officials:
They were garbage. They had no bearing on the game but they missed so many calls on Alabama and were so quick to call them on us, it was laughable. At the least, the review crew seemed to get it right for the first time I can remember.

Re: Monday morning thoughts

I think the state of the program and the rumors swirling around Freeze may have resulted in getting who we got.   Can't say I blame them.  Think about it from a job opp standpoint.  Any coach that was worth going after is going to review our situation and review his current salary vs what we are offering. IF the money was not the motivating factor then they passed on us.  When the money was a huge bump in pay as well as a higher station it was much easier to convince them to come onboard.
This debacle started well before these coaches were hired though fwiw.  Tough spot for them.  Zero leadership.  Team has quit.  They won't be retained by next HC who will bring his own staff in so instead of trying to coach these kids up they are working the networks for their next gig.

Re: Monday morning thoughts

Fwiw I didn't watch the game at all.  I knew better.  I simply don't care what happens from now until first week of December.  It doesn't matter and it is likely going to get much worse before it's over.  2-10 is a real possibility with some major ass whippings to come.

Do you honestly think we will hire another coach? Remember... WAOM!

I absolutely wholeheartedly believe we will make a big time hire as a Head Coach and he will be allowed to hire his own staff. We have one shot to get this right or we risk a 10+ year setback.

Re: Monday morning thoughts

Even the GOBs will want Luke out at this point.

With our past history of hiring coaches, I hope you are right, but at this time I cannot put much faith in the administration doing the best thing by hiring a qualified, experienced head coach.  It will take a group like the one assembled that were very much for removing Pete Boobe to push the administration to make a good decision.  Hopefully, I am wrong.

A bad 'tree' cannot bear good fruit.....and a chain is only as strong as it's weakest link (insert administration)......both of those come to mind.

But you can bet the Flying Monkeys of the Lyceum will be sent out to tell us otherwise......
