Report: Houston Nutt interested in UTSA opening
Houston Nutt last coached in 2011 at Ole Miss, which was nearly a decade ago. He has not been actively tied to any openings at schools that currently have one.
Could the 62-year old be interested in getting back into coaching? According to Brad Logan of the Clarion Ledger, that appears to be the case.
Logan reports that the former Arkansas and Ole Miss head coach has ‘a very high interest’ in the opening at UTSA, who just fired Frank Wilson this past Sunday after four seasons at the helm.
Multiple sources confirm that former Arkansas and Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt has "a very high interest" in the head coach opening at UTSA.
Last month, Nutt commented on whether he’d want to return to Arkansas, who is another school with an opening. Nutt was there from 1998-2007.
“This is a crossroads. This is a big time decision for the University of Arkansas. This has got to be the right fit. You can’t just say “Oh, this is Chad Morris’ fault,” because I saw it back in 2010, 2011, 2012. I saw recruiting going down. I saw it getting slower, and recruiting is the lifeline as you all know...Arkansas is a little different. You have to start at Arkansas, and they may not be a four-star right off the bat...There are so many names that didn’t start out a five star, but guess where they ended up? Because they had the fight and the heart of wanting to be a Razorback, and to me, that’s what it’s about. So yeah, I’d love to come back, but again, it has to be right and everybody as to be together, and it’s not easy. Because you are in the toughest conference in America.”
Nutt went 75-48 including a 42-38 mark in the SEC during his 10-year career in Arkansas. Things didn’t end all that well for at the end of the 2007 season when he resigned from Arkansas. One day after resigning amid several controversies and rumors, he was hired as head coach of Ole Miss, a huge rival of Arkansas. He coached four seasons there before being fired at the end of the 2011 season.
Nutt has not coached at a Group of Five conference school since 1997 when he coached at Boise State. Before that, he spent four seasons at FCS Murray State.
Taking the job at UTSA after being out of football for eight seasons would be an interesting turn of events for Nutt. UTSA went 3-9 (2-6 C-USA) in 2018 and 4-8 (3-5) this past season.
Wilson helped UTSA earn the No. 3 recruiting class in the C-USA in both 2016 and 2017, but that ranking slipped to No. 7 in 2018 and No. 10 in 2019. The Roadrunners are currently at No. 3 in terms of the 2020 C-USA recruiting rankings.

Is the college football world ready for another hepping of Houston Mutt? Maybe he can get UTSA to back to back Cotton Bowls!!!!!

I told a couple of friends of mine yesterday when I saw this, IF UTSA hires Nutt, they should just give up football. Makes zero sense.
A School like UTSA did the right thing when they started their program when they hired a veteran coach in Larry Coker, he got the program going and helped raise money. But you have to hire young guys at a school like that. They hired Frank Wilson, who I thought was a good hire, just to get the talent up as he has always been a great recruiter. But he was terrible. No structure, discipline , no management skills and it was a complete failure.
They need to go hire a up and coming coordinator, not a back stabbing loser that hasn't coached in about a decade and is in his 60's.
This is not like Mack Brown or Miles getting back in the game at their ages, both of them have HUGE reputations and National Titles. Something Nutt doesn;t.

It was really surprising that Wilson dropped the ball so badly. I remember back a few years ago before Luke was named HC, there were people actively rooting for Wilson to get the gig here. Hindsight is 20/20 I guess.
