Re: Sportsline Releases Ole Miss Coaches Odds

I'd be good with Napier and Clark. Rather have Clark over him. Norvell would be my first choice I think.

Would we be looking at Norvell had we won? I'd like to steer clear of Kiffen.

Re: Sportsline Releases Ole Miss Coaches Odds

As someone who knows Lane pretty well, I would take him in a heart beat  if I were OM.  Instant credibility with recruits, jolt of electricity into the program, just enough arrogance to go head to head with Satan and Ed O. AND, a hell of a football coach.

Many people don't like a little arrogance, but I think it is essential in winning, especially in a viper pit like the SEC West.

Re: Sportsline Releases Ole Miss Coaches Odds

Historically, OM does not make big time hires. We typically 1)promote Luke’s from within, 2)hire washed up Houston Nutts, 3)hire Orgerons prior to them having head coaching experience or 4)hire unknown Hugh Freezes away from second rate schools. I would say that the gamble with hiring Freeze away from Arkansas State worked the best of the four options above. Napier at ULL is probably like a Freeze at Ark State and that fits our hiring style.

In recent history I have not seen an alternate option 5 where we compete with other schools for a highly sought after coach and win. So just going by history and nothing else, that probably eliminates Norvell and Bill Clark. Now, also of note, every year the sports pundits rate schools on their coaching hires and they usually end up being wrong. It’s rare that the coaches in very high demand that sign large contracts actually work out when they change schools.

Any way we go it’s a gamble but I think it’s imperative that we get a coach with some sort of previous head coaching experience. Norvell sounds great if he can translate his Memphis success to oxford. Same with Clark. I don’t know much about Napier but I guess same can be said of him. Napier is much more affordable.

This is a great analysis and shows the historically actual methods used by Ole Miss for past hires.  From this analysis, the new coach will probably be Bill Napier.  He is affordble, comes from a lower tier division, haw a low buyout, and could quickly be available.  Allegedly, Moo U was going to fire Morehead and hire Napier, so this could show interest and immediate availability from Napier.

Norvell would be a great choice.  He is proven and on a lot of wanted lists for coaching vacancies.  Norvell has taken a Memphis team of 2-3 star athletes and made them competitive in a conference with some good teams.

Bill Clark has done a really good job at UAB.  He is also on several wanted lists for coaching vacancies.  I know some people in Birmingham who know Clark.  They speak very highly of him and also say that his players really like him.  He has done a lot to resurrect the UAB program.

What Ole Miss does not need is a coordinator who has never been a head coach.  Ole Miss has a tendency to hire coordinators, pay them a high salary, and let them learn on the job.  Hopefully Ole Miss has learned that this method does not work.  Prime examples are Orgeron and Luke.  Both were coordinators, learned head coaching on the job, and were not successful HCs at Ole Miss.

Now is the chance for Ole Miss to make a good hire with someone who can compete in the SEC West.  There are some good choices available and hopefully Ole Miss will make a good decision.

Maybe Jimmy Sexton will give us a good one.

Re: Sportsline Releases Ole Miss Coaches Odds

Jimmy Sexton has ruined college sports by inflating coaching salaries.  He has a monopoly on most of the top name coaches and should be investigated for some of his activities.  His actions are direct correlations to the extremely high and ludicrous salaries associated with college football head coaches.  Sexton might find a good coach for Ole Miss, but you can be assured that the school will pay dearly and also be held hostage for more money (ie - Houston Mutt) once there is any sign of success.
