Ole Miss coach Matt Luke will earn big payday if Rebels beat Missouri
OXFORD — When Ole Miss plays Missouri on Saturday, the Rebels will take the field knowing the outcome could have massive implications for their postseason destiny.
But for Ole Miss coach Matt Luke, a win could mean a healthy bonus as well.
According to his contract, Ole Miss owes Luke a $150,000 bonus for each SEC win in a given season, starting with his third. Since Ole Miss already has two SEC wins this year against Arkansas and Vanderbilt, a win over Missouri would trigger such a payday.
It's also written into Luke's contract that he is set to earn $150,000 for each win over a Power 5 opponent, so this game has a chance to be doubly fruitful for Luke's bank account.
Bonuses for SEC wins unique in conference
Such provisions are unique among SEC coaches. Luke is the only one among the 13 SEC head coaches for whom contract details are public — Vanderbilt is a private university — who earns bonuses based on the number of SEC wins he notches.
However, there are coaches who have win-total incentives. Missouri coach Barry Odom, for example, makes $25,000 for a seven-win season, $50,000 for an eight-win season and an additional $50,000 for each win beyond eight, capping out at $350,000.
Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, meanwhile, nets a bonus of $250,000 for every win beginning with the seventh of the year. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn and LSU coach Ed Orgeron get similar bonuses if their teams win 10 or more games in a season.
Bowl games, academic performance also earn bonuses
Other details in Luke's contract are more boilerplate when compared against other SEC coaches. Luke is eligible to earn the following bonuses if certain marks are met:
$1 million: Win the national championship
$500,000: Participate in a College Football Playoff semifinal game
$400,000: Win the SEC Championship game
$250,000: Play in a New Year's Six bowl game (Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton, Fiesta, Peach)
$150,000: Participate in SEC Championship game
$125,000: Participate in the Citrus Bowl
$100,000: Participate in a Group of Six bowl (Taxslayer, Outback, Belk, Music City, Texas, Liberty)
$100,000: Single-year team Academic Progress Rate (APR) of 975 or above
$50,000: Participate in the Birmingham Bowl or Independence Bowl
$50,000: Single-year team APR of 950 or above
Luke's contract also allows for a pool of $5,135,000 to pay his 10 assistant coaches and $2,100,000 to pay five additional staffers including strength and conditioning coaches, football operations staffers, analysts, recruiting staffers and player personnel staffers.

So could these payments to Luke for the SEC wins over 2 and Power 5 wins be another bungled contract decision? The structure of these payouts seem like a waste of money, especially with the loss of SEC bowl money, Bjerks refusal to take money from the SEC, and loss revenue sales from football tickets.
To be successful in the SEC, Luke should be expected to win at least 5 SEC games. He should only be compensated for wins over 4 and his compensation should not be $150,00. A Power 5 win is good, but to pay him for both the SEC win and the Power 5 win is paying him double to win a game. Incentives are good, but Luke's bank account will become much bigger with these extremely high over payments for his dismal show of success.

Luke's contract is baffling. It's one that you'd see for an established HC. His contract should have been so much smaller for a first time HC.
I'm hoping we can keep Mac and RR - they've done a good job coaching players. I'm not worried about keeping Luke - he's just a cheerleader on the sidelines.

His salary is too high for unproven. Like the incentive plan but too high base. Not crazy about paying the Dad either but it seems all the past HC's have had carry on baggage for us to keep up.

So how many Lukes are on the payroll at Ole Miss? Something is not right and it is all related to Ole Miss politics. Football fans, face the truth about Ole Miss football.
The team will be mired in mediocrity for decades and will not have many bright spots. It will be a time when beating Vanderbilt will be a high point. Getting romped regularly by Alabama, LSU, and Auburn will become normal. Close games, but losses, with TAMU, Arkansas and Moo U will be considered moral victories. Ole Miss will start losing on a regular basis to Moo U.
Now there is talk of bringing in John Hartwell and Walker Jones into the Ole Miss AD. This is GOB home cooking at its best. Ole Miss needs to face the reality of the situation and realize that they will become the doormat of the SEC with this all-star WAOM GOB line up.

I very seldom make predictions, but I'll depart from that here. I predict that neither John Hartwell nor Walker Jones will be our new AD.

Rebel fans should hope not. It is time to clean house at Ole Miss and start with anyone named Luke. Then it is time to hire quality people who will run a championship caliber program. While Ole Miss squanders in political upheaval, other schools grow and surpass them.
