University removes Meek’s name from Farley Hall

University removes Meek’s name from Farley Hall

OXFORD — The process to separate Ed Meek from the University of Mississippi’s School of Journalism and New Media is complete. Earlier this month the university removed ‘Meek’ from the exterior sign attached to Farley Hall. The sign now reads ‘School of Journalism and New Media.’

The removal comes after Meek requested to have his name removed from the school on Sept. 22 following an outcry over his controversial Facebook post on Sept. 18 which caused several university organizations and students to demand Meek’s association with the journalism school be dissolved.

Meek, a two-time graduate of the university, donated $5.3 million to the journalism school and subsequently had his name added to it in 2009. The university employed him for 37 years before his retirement in 1999.

At the recommendation of Chancellor Jeff Vitter on behalf of Meek, trustees on the board of Mississippi’s Institutions of Higher Learning unanimously voted to strip Meek’s name from ‘Meek School of Journalism and New Media’ in October. His name renamed on Farley Hall for nearly two months following the board’s vote.

A decision on if there will be a new name chosen for the school and how that process will go moving forward has not been announced by the university.

I think the question has been asked before, but is the university going to refund the 5.3 mil?

Ha! I doubt it.

No, not unless Bjerk can con the donors into digging deep into their pockets.  This was really shameful on Ole Miss.  Ed Meek did LOTS for Ole Miss and was not supported by his school or the chancellor.  Someone could have simply said the whole thing is a misunderstanding.  There is no doubt that Ed Meek did not mean for his comment and post to be made into a racial slur.

Of course it wasn't but I suspect he had enemies as he did nothing but illustrate what is going on after dark, I was on the SQ after DDD last spring. about 9pm. I won't be back there for that again. Frightening.

Re: University removes Meek’s name from Farley Hall

There were large groups of people who were loitering, cursing, dropping their cans and bottles in the street and frankly I doubt of they live in Lafayette County. A local friend of mine knows an FBI agent who lives in Oxford who reports that these people are tracked from Batesville, Holly Springs areas. That validated my supposition.
