Some might remember

I begged OM not to hire Longo.  As I posted when his name came up, he coached at my alma mater Sam Houston so I know his offense thru and thru.  I have said he doesnt coach a running game and thinks the short passes are just as good as a run game. Well in 1-AA that works, the do not have the same speed and size as D1.  Linebackers at D1 can run and then make the tackle.

His offense is also very simple.   D1 teams do serious film study.  Their coaches nail down tendencies and formations quickly..

Simply, over matched coaching...by CALIFORNIA..

Re: Some might remember

Hugh Freeze hire --- Freeze wasn't the best at hiring quality assistants.

Rock....the Cal players were saying on the sidelines that we kept running the same plays over and over and over..... Heck I figure I could stop that kind of offense....  Even the announcers were saying that....and were even predicitng when we'd blitz and when we'd back out..... If Huard(sp) could do that you know the Cal coaches could.....

I remember you telling us about Longo.....I also remember watching his team lose to James Madision to the tune of around 70 to 7 or thereabouts.....and I remember thinking....Hugh, REALLY?

Re: Some might remember

Rock, I remember those comments and did not like the hire.  Blame Freeze, AGAIN!!!  With a short list of plays, it is not too hard to determine how to defend against them.  On short passes, they can be defended, and if intercepted become a pick six.  This is the SEC, not the Southland.  This gimmick offense will not work.  If Cal can defend it, what do you think the other teams in the SEC West can do against it?

Re: Some might remember

If we get a 2 year bowl ban, could we just forfeit all the games next year and start over the year after.  All of our talent is going to hit the road anyway.

Re: Some might remember

If Luke wants to survive, he needs to step in and get involved in the offense. Longo's 28 play snake oil offense will quickly be shut down by the DC of every team left on our schedule. Luke better intervene without delay.

Re: Some might remember

I don't put this on Longo. There wasn't much difference in what I saw last season vs what I saw yesterday. Most of our offensive woes have revolved around poor poor poor offensive line play and yesterday was no different. This has not happened overnight. This is the result of multiple years of Luke coaching the OL. It is what it is.

I agree on the OL play....But I think Hugh's basketball on grass offense had more different looks so it wasn't so easy to predict that it was the same few plays over and over to the point you know what's coming.  With Hugh's offense about the only thing that was truly predictable was the goal line special package.....You knew when the kid from Lafayette County entered the game he was going to get the ball 90% of the time......that was plain stupid and I could never figure out why Hugh, who was so sneaky and able to confuse the defense most of the rest of the time, ran such a predictable scheme in the red zone.  About the only thing I could figure out is he thought it was so gimmicy/cutesey to have a goal line offense "package" that he just couldn't admit that it might have been an interesting concept but in reality it was easy to defend.....

Re: Some might remember

OL play was not the issue last night, it was scheme. When you know the strengths and weeknesses of your personnel, you game plan and scheme to use your strengths.  Last night Cal just abused OM's game plan of short passes and crossing patterns. That led them to stay home in the run game and outnumber the OL in run situations.  OM had a few big plays to score, other than that they didn;t get Cal out of the box .  As you saw on the last pick that was taken in, guy didn;t go anywhere. Just sat and waited.   This is lack of doing anything to help your OL.  Longo and Luke were schooled last night.
