Ole Miss fast tracks Ed Meek's request to remove his name

Ole Miss fast tracks Ed Meek's request to remove his name

University of Mississippi officials are fast tracking a process that could allow the campus to rename a building whose namesake came under scrutiny following a Facebook post that university leadership said had an “unjustified racial overtone.”

Ole Miss Chancellor Jeff Vitter announced Tuesday that journalism faculty accepted a request from Ed Meek asking for the removal of his name from the journalism school there.

Any name change will ultimately have to be approved by the state College Board. And Ole Miss implements a four-prong process before approaching the board with such a request.

The journalism school’s faculty had previously asked Meek to make the request after he shared pictures of two black female students on a post warning about the possibility of sinking real estate values. Meek also complained about the university’s 3-percent decline in enrollment and a lack of police presence on the Oxford town square.

Vitter said members of the undergraduate and graduate councils are now voting by email on whether to accept Meek’s request.
From there the matter would be considered by a council chaired by the university provost Noel Wilkin.

Meek, who served as the head of the university’s public relations team for more than 30 years, donated $5.3 million to the school named in his honor.

It’s unclear what pathways exist for the university returning any of the gift.

“There have been comments from members of the public and the media recommending that the university return the naming gift,” Vitter wrote in an open letter to the university community. “ State and federal law and the terms of the original agreement governing the management of these funds prohibit the university from making such a move unilaterally. Discussions are underway with the Meek family on the most appropriate way to proceed.”

This whole ordeal with Ed Meek has been blown out of proportion.  Since Ole Miss seems to be joining the band wagon on making Meek look like a racist, they should return to him the $5.9M donation that he made.

The university wants to do away with anything and everything associate with Ed Meeks, except the money.  The money isn't racist, it can stay but everything else has to go.

Ole Miss, you make me sick!

Maybe the young "ladies" in question can make up the difference.....I'm sure they will contribute GREATLY over the years.....  the 'culture' they exude is what OM is morphing into by distancing from anyone not willing to give in to the culture shift that is occurring.....  A lot of alumni have been made to feel unwelcome on that campus because they are actually proud southerners.....not willing to apologize for their heritage and past history.

Let's see how much this new 'culture' contributes to the coffers.....  but most likely the university (note I didn't say Ole Miss) becomes more like Jackson State which relies more on state funds than endowments....
