Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

Of course there was no playoff system in 1962, but we did the same thing.  We were #1 in the UPI, which doesn't exist any more, but not in the AP or Coaches poll.  However, there was/is no rule in place to prevent that from happening.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

I'm not saying that UCF is better than Bama, but Bama should have been out of it based on losing their division and conference. That should have already eliminated them. So,basically the regular season doesn't matter as much as it used to. They were rewarded by being able to sit at home and let Auburn lose the extra game.

The same thing happened a few years ago. Alabama did not win the division or the conference but played for the NC.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

Didn't UCF beat as many ranked opponents as Alabama did? I'd need to go back and look at the schedules again to confirm.

I think the point of the "We are National Champions" is to point out how the CFP will never let a non-P5 school in. Auburn was ranked at #7 in the CFP rankings with UCF being at #12. So that means even if the CFP was expanded to 8 teams, then schools like UCF would still not have an opportunity to get in.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

For where teams were ranked at the end of the regular season (AP top 25):

Alabama had wins over LSU (#16) and MSU (#24).
UCF had wins over Memphis (#19) and South Florida (#23)

Both had wins over ranked teams (Alabama over Clemson and UCF over Auburn) in bowl games thus far.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

Another interesting take. The NCAA recognizes Peter Wolfe's rankings as a legit national champion selector:

http://prwolfe.bol.ucla.edu/cfootball/ratings.htm

Based on this so far, UCF has a legit claim to a National Championship (assuming they stay at #1 after the Georgia vs Alabama game).

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

I can't blame UCF for trying to maximize the success of this season considering Frost is taking his entire staff to Nebraska.  I'm sure they want to keep as much attention off that reality as long as they can.
An All SEC NC game will guarantee playoff expansion just like it did last time.  Ratings are going to suck for this one.  Hell even the SEC doesn't want to see this but nonetheless this is what has occurred.
I was hoping the SEC would not win a single bowl game.  How any Ole Miss fan can pull for a fellow SEC team is lost on me.  Conference pride is like accepting the way the SEC office turned their backs on us and hung us out to dry.
I never really understood this when ColReb used to say he hoped all SEC teams would lose.  I just thought he was a grumpy old fart but it makes sense now.  Any SEC team winning only makes our recruiting that much harder.
The blue bloods of the FBS like Alabama, Ohio State, etc are always going to have great leverage when it comes to a playoff committee.  Too much money at stake to not consider them.  Add Notre Dame in there as well and you can bet any playoff expansion will have an exclusion for them to be considered if they have any shot whatsoever.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

I hope this NC game sets an all time low in ratings. And I also hope the announcers keep mentioning UCF throughout the broadcast to rattle the gumps and hillbillies.

Re: UCF declaring itself National Champions

I'm one of the people that actually think that the conference championships should be round 1 of the playoff. If you can't win your conference, you shouldn't be allowed in. Otherwise, what is the point in even having a conference championship game if you can not qualify for it but you can be qualified for a 4 spot national championship "playoff" game.
