Today I just passed through Baton Rouge as part of a 2k+ mile trip. It took me over two hours to get through the area. To bypass all the traffic, I took some roads through the city and then ended up back on the interstate. After the ride, my opinion is that Baton Rouge is a dirty town with lots of ghetto like areas and the only thing good there is the LSU campus. It made me wonder why anyone would want to live there.

Hey catfish I keep hearing about it taking a couple of hours to get through Baton Rouge. Why is it taking so long? Is it Construction? Baton Rouge Is Not that large a city for it to take that long but I keep hearing that.

Baton Rouge is on a major East-West route. There are lots of trucks. Coming from the West you travel over a swampy area that is on a long bridge and there are no exits. When you get to Baton Rouge from the West, you have to go over the Mississippi River Bridge which is an older four lane bridge. There is no bypass around Baton Rouge, so all traffic funnels through the city, so through traffic is combined with local traffic. These road criteria cause contribute to the slow downs.
Yesterday I came from the West and eventually took Exit 1 and navigated to the old Mississippi River Bridge. This route was tolerable, but once I got back to I-10 there was another traffic jam. Then I went down Government Street (Hwy 73) and ended up on Hwy 61. Hwy 61 fed into I-12 and took me around the traffic jam. A friend who lives East of Baton Rouge told me it would often take her over an hour to drive 15 miles into work.

You never try to drive through the I 12-10 split after 2 pm on any given day. Your only hope is getting on Airline Highway (US 61). There are many red lights but it is manageable. The City of Baton Rouge has gone from a beautiful major city to a third world country since Katrina so travel at your own risk through old Baton Rouge, especially the Plank Road area.

I use to live in Baton Rouge. Moved out over 40 years ago, but lived the the BR area until my move to Texas 3 years ago. Every Mayor-President of Baton Rouge since Woody Dumas (1960) has had at least 1 or more surveys for the feasibility to build a loop around Baton Rouge. These studies have more than built a loop 10 times over and have cost the taxpayers several $100 million. No loop yet!!! Going through BR is ridiculous and getting more dangerous each day. Yes - I'm "packing" if and when I go there.
