I agree with your points Bowhunter, but my point is that this ended up being really terrible year to hire a coach and there's really nobody out there that is stellar. I can't really think of one at all. I am very very happy that we didn't end up with Strong. He was a terrible candidate and would have been Nutt part 2, in my opinion.
I also agree that we can pin 3 to 4 losses on Luke's coaching. But, regardless of the motives, we ended up making a decision that makes sense given the coach market of this year. The only one that I would have liked to get, given Norvell's personal issues, is Kiffin and he is questionable at best. The problem is we are not just talking about what was available this year but for the next several years. If we hired someone outside and they underperformed we could move on to someone else soon. But we are stuck with Luke for I am afraid a long time. Even if/when he underperforms he will be here several years with excuses being made.
I hope I am wrong. I hope he is successful and stays at Ole Miss forever. But many years of experience with him have given no evidence that will be the case.
We know what we're getting with Luke - a lazy, piss poor OL coach that is wrapped in teflon. Ole Miss desperately needed someone that would get the fanbase excited and one that has the EXPERIENCE to get us through probation. This hire was such a critical one for this program, and Bjork crapped the bed. Half of the fanbase is disgusted by the hire after having watched Luke for all of these years being unable to put together even an average OL, and then suffering through his BS coaching all season (refusing to play to win, making bad decision after bad decision). If Freeze were still the coach, we wouldn't have lost to Cal, UPig, or A&M this season (most likely).
So, the admin has further fractured the fanbase, and that's gonna result in additional lost revenue when season ticket sales plummet, more empty seats, a worse performing team, and what will probably end up being several horrible recruiting classes.
Oh, and to add to this - Luke was here when violations were taking place. So, I doubt we did ourselves any favors when it comes to the COI looking at if we even tried to get rid of any possible issues that took place under our staff. He could have easily gotten Bill Clark for much cheaper than what we're having to pay Luke, and it would have absolutely been an upgrade.

As soon as I talk myself off the ledge, y'all put me right back on it. Lol
Yeah, Luke was a lazy hire and a poor decision. We needed new blood and a fresh start. We get to look forward to more of the same and for a long time.

For a year with nobody out there, according to the opinions of people who've forgotten more than I'll ever know, Miss. St. managed to make what appears to be, on the surface anyway, a very good hire. Unproven as a HC, but someone who seems to fit their needs. At least he wasn't a bust in his previous jobs.
And look how fast they moved on him...... RB had months and months and the best he could do is to walk down the hall and hire an under performing OL coach who has never even been a coordinator......and yeah I know NCAA/COI....blah, blah, blah....excuse, excuse, excuse......as usual. We'll know this week or next about the COI....WHY the sudden rush to hire ML? I'll venture a guess....The window for the excuse (COI report) was about to close and the plan to move ML in as HC was about to have it's main selling point (threat of COI uncertainty) eliminated.

Luke is entrenched at Ole Miss and will be going nowhere no matter how poorly he performs. You can almost be assured that next year he will get a one year contract extension so that his contract is at the maximum four year limit for the State of Mississippi. This will probably happen each year thereafter.
After past history, it appears history is repeating itself. Ole Miss had the chance to make a WOW hire, but instead took the easy route and hired Matt Luke. Luke was an under performer as an OL coach and has been a mediocre coach wherever he coached, so what makes anyone believe that he will be a great HC? In all sincerity, I do hope I am wrong, but when dealing with reality it appears that Ole Miss is in a "wash, rinse, repeat" cycle.
What we've basically done is voluntarily accept a 4 year penalty to add on to what the NCAA clubs us with..... I don't care how much ML loves OM that is not a qualification for HC....period!
A coach that can't teach his OL basic technique isn't qualified as OL coach if he either doesn't know or can't teach fundamentals.....of his own 'specialty' for goodness sake...... How is he supposed to recognize fundamentals shortcomings of other positions if he can't do it with the position he played? We can expect 6-6 and maybe a 7-5 season for the foreseeable future depending on how the ball bounces.....and we sentenced ourselves VOLUNTARILY to that fate for at least the next 4 years......because the GOBs will circle the wagons for ML and the koolaid excuses will be plenteous..... The primary one.......NCAA sanctions...they will be able to milk that one for at LEAST 4 years.....

at the end of the day, Luke is our coach. As long as he works hard and improves the game to game preparations then that is all we can hope for. If Luke wins games, all will be forgotten. If he does anything other than provide progress, he will be assessed justly.
I stated many times I was against luke as HC squarely because his OL and his running game duties underachieved every year. He got a pass the first 2 years but it never improved year over year in terms of consistency.
As a head coach, there is a new dynamic and now he just has to manage people to do their job. that is where I hope he can elevate his game. He wants Ole Miss to win. He is not doing this just as a job to get paid for, he is working for his university. Big difference.
So, what I hope does not happen is the mass anamosity from the fan base that people like orgeron had to endure. there is going to be a learning curve that every new(er) head coach deals with so in my eyes, as long as the team continues to fight like they did even when they were getting their asses handed to them, I am ok. But we have to learn and progress which we did. improvement week over week is all that is required to build a program and in this small sample size, I at least saw that in this staff.
Luke will have 2 years. unless he craps the bed in 18, he will be our coach for 2 years. Mainly because the Ncaa crap will just about be in the rear view mirror by that point and if we are not winning games after 2019, we will be in a new coaching search. But during these 2 years, I am not going to add to the speed bumps as a fan. I am not going to push anti luke narratives and I am not going to work against what the intent of this staff is working towards. The visceral hate orgeron had to deal with was embarrassing. In hind sight, he was not going to be a good coach, but he tried and he actually built our program within 4 years to compete for championships. How much farther would he been able to to go in terms of building the program if he did not have stiff headwinds from a huge population of the fan base? Luke does not deserve this so I hope we all give the man a little breathing room. it hurts the team more than luke. It hurts recuriting more than luke, it hurts our program more than anything.

We are now seeing what Orgeron can do with full support of an admin and fan base. Well maybe not full support but at least he isn’t being outright stymied at every turn. LSU went 9-3 this season with him at the helm in his first full season as the full time HC.
Now that said here is my issue with this total double standard. When Orgeron was hired the GOB’s were mad as hell about it from day one and never stopped working to undermine him. Now that the GOB’s have successfully placed their guy in the driver’s seat we are all supposed to just fall in line and support our program. To hell with that bullshit.
I will support what is best for my football program and my university and it isn’t nor ever will be Matt Luke. I’m not saying he won’t be successful I’m saying he has not and won’t ever get a free pass at all of any length or period of time. We are operating in a highly competitive situation where our competitors are steadily improving while we are running in circles chasing our asses.
What we are seeing to develop is what happens in corporations when the underperforming or underdeserving employee is promoted. The employees responsible for the company success walk away and leave the company in turmoil. Hard lessons have to be learned and our admin is going to have to face the music of empty seats, reduced season ticket sales, reduced donations, reduced support and overall apathy. Just like it was during the Cut era post Eli, Nutt era, etc.

THIS x 1,000,000,000,000!!!!!!!!!!!!
The GOB's had a damn hissy fit with Orgeron and did nothing but undermine him at every single turn. And now that they finally got their way they want everyone to play nice. Why the hell should we when we KNOW it's not good for the program? I hope Luke falls on his fat cabbage patch kid ass! And I hope Bjork is tarred and feathered and run out of town. There were SIGNIFICANTLY better coaches that Ole Miss could have gotten, but Bjork didn't do it. Instead, we are paying over THREE MILLION DOLLARS (seriously - let that sink in) a year for the shittiest OL coach that Ole Miss has ever had in it's entire history. Meanwhile, you have guys like Bill Clark at UAB that would coach circles around Luke's fat ass and he's making UNDER 1 million per year.
Bottom line is this - I don't care that "OMG, Luke loves Ole Miss" bullshit. Luke is not qualified to be a HC at a high school program, much less at a Power 5 school that is facing crippling sanctions and desperately needs someone that can guide the program through this time, not some lazy fat ass that has to learn to be a head coach on the job - to the tune of THREE MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR.

what ever guys, if tennessee can't hire a coach. if ark is still looking for a coach, if TAM hasnt named a coach yet, who the living hell is going to be hired as HC that people are not going to fuss about after all the other schools not under NCAA clouds with a mallet hoovering over our heads? State hired an OC. They have proven to be a national title contender.
the "GOB" network my have their hands all up in this, but the fact the "GOB" network has power is because the rest of the "little people' stay home and pout and boycott...
