There was nobody more upset about Luke's hiring than I was. Considering who else we were looking at and after hearing that Norvell's chances were shot due to the fling with a student at a past job and seeing all of the other coaching searches and how bungled they are, this just is not the year to be looking for a head coach. I know we will have to put up with on-the-job training but at least it is with a guy that loves Ole Miss. If we had hired Strong or another hire just to be PC, I would have been more upset. All in all, he kept the team fighting and playing hard. If we can get some recruits and defense, we may be alright.

The decision has now been made. Some folks don't want to accept it and probably never will. Matt deserves a chance. Let's at least give him that.

I still don't like the hire but I'd rather be where we are than where Tennessee is right now. But honestly, I couldn't think of anyone that I would throw the bank at. There's really not a lot of big name coaches right now.

I'm one of those who isn't ok with it and likely won't ever be and here's a few reasons why:
Matt was hand placed here and has repeatedly underperformed at his position coach job. He was Ed O's Recruiting Coordianator and Ed O ran him off for being lazy.
Duke's O line got better when he left to come back to Ole Miss. Again hand delivered to Hugh Freeze's first staff. How many times have we all complained about how crappy his o line has been over the years. Had it been any other coach they would have been removed/fired/hired somewhere else. Luke not only stayed but he was given raises several times in the process of underperforming.
I totally support the fallback agreement with Luke in January. We had to do something and while he wasn't the most deserving he made the most sense of who was on staff in regards to familiarity.
No real search was ever performed. Depending on who you ask we had a contract on the table for Strong and he declined due to language in it. Dave Doreen was so certain he would be offered the job he cancelled recruiting trips for his asst coaches this past weekend.
Luke is offered or given the job. However you want to phrase it. The optics are terrible. No other way to describe it. Our issue with hiring a proven head coach has zero to do with the NCAA looming issues. It's the GOB network meddling. When you have agents like Jimmy Sexton steering candidates away from our opening it should raise a red flag. A whole fleet of them.
As others have stated if we were going to name Luke why the rush? IF the NCAA decision comes down as expected this or next week it's not like Luke was going elsewhere. Hell he knew the job was his all along so again why rush? We had asst's already telling kids two weeks or so ago Luke was being retained. Maybe that's recruiting "juice" or maybe it was accurate. We won't ever know. Again why the rush? If we wait until the NCAA penalties are announced then maybe we have more coaches show interest being able to clearly see what the future held for Ole Miss. Why the rush?
Total destruction of trust from a fanbase that has never had much trust in the admin anyways. Ross suckered many of us including myself as not being a GOB soldier and doing the search so discreetly no one knew what was happening. Then wham we get hit with Luke.
Now this isn't an indictment on Luke the person. You won't find a better person. He's the kind of guy you want your daughter to marry. Good guy. Good husband. Good father. Gritty player. Great Rebel. However none of those redeeming qualities makes him worthy of an SEC HC position. None. Zero. Nada.
So what we ended up with once again is an Ole Miss hire. Total inside job. It won't matter how poorly he does going forward because the GOB's don't care. They got their guy in place and as long as Bjork stays in lock step they may wait on bringing back the final pieces of the puzzle as his replacement. That is the most troubling part that I struggle with even now. I want to like Luke as a coach but my mind and especially my heart knows better. Tigers don't change their stripes. Now he's got a solid contract he will revert right back to what he has done best which is coast. I so want to be wrong on this. I truly do. Will be the first one in line to admit how wrong I was. Again my mind and heart know better.
I find myself getting swept up in the emotions of the hire but then I have to ground myself with the reality that Luke took a team that should have been 9-3 and went 6-6. We were really really close to 4-8. A helluva lot closer to 4-8 than 9-3 and there is no arguing that. A last second low odds td pass to DK at Kentucky and a game ending injury to Fitz in the egg bowl secured unlikely wins. You could say we stole them both and I couldn't argue. What is more troubling is we weren't even competitive against Bama or Auburn. No one thought we had a chance to win and we didn't disappoint. Remind you of anyone? Cut? Cut 2.0?
Again I sure hope I'm wrong. Maybe we go out and kill it recruiting and really take advantage of Mullen leaving and try to gain some ground on them in recruiting. The opportunity is certainly there. Only time will tell but I would be lying if I thought I didn't already know what was coming down the pipe. We've seen this before.

This is the answer that stood out most for me from the Bjork interview on the coaching search:
Q: Did you bring Vitter one or two final candidates?
A: “Just one. Matt Luke.”

Luke is entrenched at Ole Miss and will be going nowhere no matter how poorly he performs. You can almost be assured that next year he will get a one year contract extension so that his contract is at the maximum four year limit for the State of Mississippi. This will probably happen each year thereafter.
If Luke has such a great plan, then it should be revealed to the fans. Is this plan just some generic wish list or is there something in the plan that can be realistically attained? The plan cannot be so super secretive that it is not public information, yet you can almost be assured that the fans will be kept in the dark about it.
At this time, why would fans trust the Ole Miss Administration? The school consistently makes bad decisions and does not seem to care about the majority of the fans. The whole coaching search was a smokescreen so that the GOB could anoint Luke as HC. The Administration is only concerned about the country club crowd and they were appeased with the Luke hire.
In the future, Ole Miss will be lucky to have break even years. There will be at least one or two blow outs every year and Ole Miss will not be very competitive. In the SEC West Ole Miss will most likely rank no better than fourth and generally will either be sixth or seventh. Thank goodness Ole Miss has Vanderbilt as a permanent opponent. Hey, but don't worry, Ole Miss always wins the party and provides a good elitist social atmosphere!!!
After past history, it appears history is repeating itself. Ole Miss had the chance to make a WOW hire, but instead took the easy route and hired Matt Luke. Luke was an under performer as an OL coach and has been a mediocre coach wherever he coached, so what makes anyone believe that he will be a great HC? In all sincerity, I do hope I am wrong, but when dealing with reality it appears that Ole Miss is in a "wash, rinse, repeat" cycle.

I agree with your points Bowhunter, but my point is that this ended up being really terrible year to hire a coach and there's really nobody out there that is stellar. I can't really think of one at all. I am very very happy that we didn't end up with Strong. He was a terrible candidate and would have been Nutt part 2, in my opinion.
I also agree that we can pin 3 to 4 losses on Luke's coaching. But, regardless of the motives, we ended up making a decision that makes sense given the coach market of this year. The only one that I would have liked to get, given Norvell's personal issues, is Kiffin and he is questionable at best.

As fans we are stuck with Luke and can hope that he does better than anticipated. Unfortunately from past history, combined with a missing trust factor, it is hard to think in a positive manner.
Hiring Strong would have been a both a PR move and the hiring of a known coach with experience. His name alone could have possibly enhanced recruiting. Most likely, as mentioned above, he would have been Mutt 2 and gone into vacation mode after a couple of seasons. If Strong had to be terminated, then you can be assured that Ole Miss would be pulled into the racial limelight.

The problem is we are not just talking about what was available this year but for the next several years. If we hired someone outside and they underperformed we could move on to someone else soon. But we are stuck with Luke for I am afraid a long time. Even if/when he underperforms he will be here several years with excuses being made.
I hope I am wrong. I hope he is successful and stays at Ole Miss forever. But many years of experience with him have given no evidence that will be the case.

For a year with nobody out there, according to the opinions of people who've forgotten more than I'll ever know, Miss. St. managed to make what appears to be, on the surface anyway, a very good hire. Unproven as a HC, but someone who seems to fit their needs. At least he wasn't a bust in his previous jobs.
