From Ben Garrett:
Make no mistake, athletics director Ross Bjork is making a bold play in removing the interim tag from Luke and handing him the job on a full-time basis, even if, contractually, he’s allowed himself protection if this grand experiment doesn’t work out. Luke, as first reported by The Ole Miss Spirit, was handed a four-year deal in the neighborhood of $9 million, landing Luke among the lowest-paid coaches in the SEC.
.......
‘Cause now it’s real. Matt Luke is the head coach of Ole Miss football. The fan base has never been more divided. Many wanted a program reset, which is not a reflection on Luke, but the ugliness of the last however many months. Lane Kiffin would have been interested in Ole Miss, per sources. Ole Miss didn’t approach him. Charlie Strong wanted Ole Miss, per sources. After some early vetting, he fell off as a candidate. Ole Miss looked at nearly double-digit candidates, we were told. Skeptical hippo is skeptical, but OK. Bjork deemed Luke the guy. He got his dream job, and he’ll fight like mad every day for Ole Miss. Those are some positives.
But he’s been handed a difficult starting point. Recruiting success could help turn the tide, but wins and losses will be the ultimate decider. Luke is in an unenvious position. But, hey, he was here before, remember? In July.
He had his problems this season. He had his bright spots, too. Give the man his due where he deserves it. Give the man his criticism as well, and if you’d prefer to wait and see and guard yourself, I can’t say I blame you. The Ole Miss fan base should be allowed as much. Ole Miss long ago passed the line of absurdity. I can’t remember the days when football was just, well, football. Luke will at least return Ole Miss to that.
The fish bowl is unforgiving, and Luke was just tossed into the deep end of the water without a life-preserver. No matter what you think of him, though, you can at least take home that he’s going to go to work and bust his ass.
Welcome to the circus.

Hiring Luke as head football coach at Ole Miss is essentially giving Ole Miss the Death Penalty.

Guys, this was not the splash head coach we wanted. I am not thrilled with Luke but I know he almost won 9 games this year with one of the worst defenses in the nation.
So here is the deal, I will not root for his failures nor am I going to bitch about his second to second decision making. We are behind the eightball and the ncaa is still looming. We need a unified front so if he can prove us wrong, we didn’t try and sabotage him.
At the very least, we know who he is and even in the disastrous games, the team never quit. That says a lot to me. His first challenge is keeping people from transferring. His bigger challenge is salvaging this shitty recruiting class. Both require our fans to stop publicly bitching about him.
I am wired to look at the brute side, I hope our fan base will do the same

His total stupidity cost us several games and nearly cost us the Egg Bowl. Even the announcers were baffled at Luke's stupidity. The guy was a shitty OL coach that should have been fired long ago. This is a bullshit hire and the fanbase should NOT accept it.

He almost won 9 games with a historically bad schedule and a historically talented offense, yet he blew it bc he wasn't ready to be a HC.
He was our future HC th day Freeze left. He could have lost every game this year and the excuse would have been "he came in late to a tough situation, let's give him another year". Next year, we are going to win some games bc of the talent on offense but we will still lose many we should win but the excuse will be "the NCAA cloud has hurt us in recruiting the last few years." Then, when everyone on offense is gone in 2019, we will suck and the excuse will be "this is what happens with our major sanctions, Luke is who we need to guide us through bc he loves ole miss". Then in 2020 when the rest of whatever talent we have left is gone and we are winless in the sec, it will be the same excuse.
Everything is in place for Luke to be here for at least 5 more years. Scary

This is a TERRIBLE hire. Ole Miss needed a clean house and now we have some guy that let our players act like complete thugs all season. We lost 3 and maybe 4 games due to stupid coaching mistakes. I give up. Instead of standing behind Ole Miss, I'm going to let them earn me back by success. That may be a crappy attitude to have but I don't have the time or patience to care until they start showing me that they care too.

I'm dizzy from all of that spin. Luke is lazy as hell - how anyone can say he'd work his ass off (that would take ALOT OF WORK) and keep a straight face is amazing. Let's take a look:
1. Luke quit because recruiting took too much time and too much work.
2. Luke was forced back on Freeze by the GOB network.
3. Luke has been unable to put together an OL that is worth a damn in the half decade since he's been back at Ole Miss.
4. Bjork wasted a ton of money for a "national coaching search". Seriously - the spending of funds on this should be investigated.
5. Bjork lied during the NCAA investigation and lied about going out and hiring someone with experience.
6. Luke was on Freeze's staff during all of the NCAA investigations. If he didn't know of anything bad going on, then that tells ya that the guy is dumb as dirt.

Ole Miss is stuck with Luke and has been for several years. If Luke under performs as a coach, there will always be an excuse, just as there was always an excuse about the OL. No matter what happens, Luke is in and will always be in. Fans can only hope that he will be successful, but it is extremely disappointing to know that Ole Miss could have hired someone with more notoriety and experience could have been hired.

Excuse my language but Horseshit. Luke did not come close to winning 9 games. Yes we should have beat Arkansas because we were ahead 31-7. And yes our sorry Defense allowed the Hogs to run wild after we built up a hugh lead. But that should not have stopped our offense from scoring in the second half.
Yes we woulda, coulda, shoulda, beat the Hogs but our inexperienced HC and his Inexperienced Staff blew it. And the same with a bad California team and the same with a bad Texas A&M team, we built good leads and should have won but again our Inexperienced coaching staff could not make the Offensive and Defensive adjustments that were needed. A good experienced HC and Staff would have won those games. You saw the same game we all saw....Stupid, Idiotic Rooky Mistakes cost us those games and those Stupid, Rooky Mistakes Almost Cost us the State game.
Now we hire this Rooky as our HC and he will have 4 years of On The Job Training. I for one am sick and tired of On the Job Training or hiring Retreads for our Head Football Coach. My Lord folks we are in the Biggest, Baddest Football Conference in the Country and we hire a Bad Offensive Line Coach to go through Ole Miss perpetual On The Job Training Program. My Heart Is Breaking Over Our Ole Miss' Administrations Don't Give A Shit Attitude. Hire a guy just because he Loves Ole Miss and played ball at Ole Miss we have to have the worst qualifications in the country for our Head Football Coach. The problem with the Athletic Expectations from Ole Miss' Administration and Many Fans is they have a Bad Inferiority Complex they don't think Ole Miss deserves to be anywhere but on the bottom. They get embarrassed to even think about asking One of The Big Name Coaches about coming to Ole Miss. We finally have the facilities and the money to pay for a Big Name Coach and Preacher Freeze proved Ole Miss could Not Only Recruit the Big Name Recruits but we could get our share of them. But our Admin's Inferiority Complex want let them hire a Big Name Coach. So we settle for an Offensive Line Coach who wasn't even good at that. Go Figure.
