Nick Saban says Ole Miss best SEC team as ‘GameDay,’ with Tim Tebow on set, debate question
Tim Tebow joined the ESPN “College GameDay” set in Athens on Saturday ahead of Georgia’s game with Tennessee.
Kirk Herbstreit posed a question to his colleagues and the former Florida quarterback: Who is the best team in the SEC?
According to ESPN, Texas - despite its strength of schedule, has an 85 percent chance to make the College Football Playoff. The Longhorns are followed by Georgia (75 percent), Tennessee (74 percent), Alabama (73 percent) and Ole Miss (63 percent).
“I like Ole Miss,” Desmond Howard said, calling the Rebels dangerous because of the confidence after beating Georgia.
“Rooollll Tide,” Pat McAfee exclaimed. “Alabama.”
Nick Saban, the former Alabama coach, answered this way.
“I want to make a point that Tim made about every team has a hole,” he said. “Ole Miss probably is the best right now. But the reason they have a hole because Georgia had recruited really really well. Alabama really really well. You get really high-profile players that leave after a year if they’re not playing, so you lose your backup and you don’t have any depth on your team.
“You have your front-line players, but you don’t have your depth. You can’t recruit depth out of the portal because those guys want to come and play. ... That’s why I think everyone got some holes.
”Tebow agreed with Saban that Ole Miss right now is the best team.
“When Alabama is at their best the way Jalen Milroe looked last week, I’m with Pat,” Herbstreit said. “I’d give the nod to Alabama.
”Saban identified three teams which have “distinguished themselves.”
“Alabama plays very well when Jalen Milroe plays well,” the former coach said. “The team feeds off of him.
“Ole Miss, you have to give them credit for their performance last week, but they have had a couple of bumps in the road, which have been a little unpredictable.
“Texas, seems on paper to be one the best, has only played one top team and got beat by the Bulldogs.”
