Joe Cox has hit the ground running as the newly-hired Ole Miss tight ends coach. The former Nick Saban assistant at Alabama has already been on the road in the Carolinas offering top high school talent. He replaces John David Baker on the Rebel staff, who departed to become the offensive coordinator at East Carolina.
A former Georgia quarterback, Cox is a native to the state of North Carolina. Cox also coached tight ends at Alabama for Saban. He has also had coaching stops at Charlotte (tight ends), South Carolina (wide receivers) and Colorado State (tight ends and later wide receivers).
Nick Saban spoke glowingly of Cox when he hired him at Alabama prior to the 2023 season.
“Coach Cox is probably one of the brightest young guys that we’ve seen in a while, so we’re glad to have him on the staff,” Saban said at the time of Cox's hiring.

Saban wasn't the only one that has sang Cox's praises and commented on what appears to be a blindingly bright future. Cox coached Colorado State’s Trey McBride, who won the Mackey Award as the nation’s best tight end, for his freshman season in 2018.
“I think Joe Cox is a tremendous coach,” McBride said. “He’s a guy who took a chance on me, being from a small town, and a guy who really taught me the game of football. Going into college, I was clueless. Him being a former quarterback really helped me and develop my game, and really taught me a lot about football.”
Cox's prowess as a coach extends beyond the field to the recruiting arena. In his time at Alabama, he was chiefly responsible for the signings of four-star wide receiver Amari Jefferson and most recently four-star tight end Caleb Odom.
