Re: Coach Search

This article sounds like Ole Miss already has a candidate in mind.  One quote from the article, “We want to be ready to strike,” Bjork said. “We want to talk to all the right people as soon as those last games are finished on Nov. 25. Then we’ll see where it goes. Does it take a couple of days? Does it take a week? That will be decided as things evolve.” shows that Ole Miss is not aggressive in the search.

Remember the Tuberville fiasco at Ole Miss?  Auburn worked behind the scenes and struck a deal with Tubby during the regular season.  Tubby was on the first Auburn jet bound for the Plains which left almost immediately after the Moo U game.  Now do you think big programs like Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Ohio State, Michigan, Texas, USC, etc. would wait until after the season ends to work to hire a needed vacancy at head coach?  Once again, the Ole Miss administration shows it has no balls and is not capable of good decisions.

Personally, my thought is that Frank Wilson will be the next head coach at Ole Miss.  Nothing against Frank, but he is not a WOW hire.  Wilson is currently the head coach at UTSA in Conference USA.  He has a record of 11-9 with only 2 years experience as a head coach.  Currently UTSA is a mid tier team in Conference USA.  Frank is supposed to be a good recruiter, but who could not recruit at LSU when their is no competition in the State of Lousisiana?

Hopefully Bjork will make a home run hire.  He needs this to show the fans that he is focused on athletics and wants Ole Miss to be a winner.  A WOW hire would unite the fans of Ole Miss and give them hope for a successful football program.

Re: Coach Search

I'm hoping for Scott Frost, but he'll probably be hired to either Florida or Tennessee before Ole Miss. I hate waiting. This sucks.

An old dog doesn't change it's ways.....it's who they are and what they know.

Well....that wouldn't surprise me and it would complete the homage to the PC crowd's crusade.

Personally I've reviewed all the names circulating and from that list of possibles I lean towards Jeremy Pruitt the DC at Bama.  He's been under Saban and knows their system.....talk about opposition research.  Rather than go with a HC from a CUSA or lesser conference I'd prefer to go with someone who has been exposed to the best in division 1.

He's also a defensive coach so I trust he'd fix our broken defense.  He would also have insight into what coach would be a good choice for OC.....having gone up against the best while at Bama.

But I still suspect we'll pick another dark horse of some sort.....it's what we do!

Re: Coach Search

Wilson recruited very well at LSU.

The main thing with us is the NCAA - that's gonna prevent us from getting as quality of a coach if we weren't about to go on probation. So, it will be a much harder sell to get a coach to come to Ole Miss. Add to that the ass whipping we're gonna get the last game of the season...... The best we can hope for is an upcoming coach that will inject life back into the program. We won't be able to attract any big name to come to Ole Miss with the current state of the program (NCAA).

Re: Coach Search

Ole Miss needs to make the next hire based on coaching ability instead of recruiting ability. Hiring Wilson would not impress me at all. The guy at UAB Bill Clark is someone I hadn't given one second of thought about but after reading the article about him over on Red Cup, he sounds like someone we should take a hard look at.

This is discouraging:

Re: Coach Search

I have no problem with them talking to Venables or Pruitt also. I just don't think we are going to persuade a current "hot name" coach to come to Oxford with the current situation. UGA took a chance with Kirby and it looks like it is paying off.

Re: Coach Search

Guys, we have had 2 flash in the pans for coaches the last 2 attempts.  Nutt walked in with a loaded roster and floated to 2 New Year Eve bowls but his laziness hit us like a ton of bricks. Freeze took dumpster fire of a program and took us to 3 straight bowls with 2 years that put us square in the NC hunt.  But he allowed his quick rise to success get to both heads and now left our program in a nuclear reactant mess.

Once the sh*theaded @$$holes at the NCAA finishes their witch hunt, we will see what we are left with and that will better position ourselves with who we realistically can go after.   I personally think we will have a 1 year bowl ban, a multi year probation and around the already imposed number of scholarship reductions. with the vast amount of positions open, we may be best to go after big time assistant coach like venerables.  But if we get hit with penalties that brings a 2 yr bowl ban, then we might as well look at someone like frank wilson.  A guy who bigger programs will not look at yet here, he will get at least a 3 year curve to show he has the chops to be a big time coach.

Any other "big time" coach will still get a 3 year curve, but would require visible improvement.  This is the issue with all programs.  FL started to molest themselves in recent years but then cut the cord quick when he hit a ceiling.   There is a "right" type of guy for the job that will bring us consistency.  When you look outside the top 5 programs, every other program are up and down from year to year.  our schedule gives us 6 wins a year and that is all I expect.  Getting bowl eligible.  With every 2-3 years we make a run for the SEC.

Who can give us that, not sure, I do like venerables.  But what is irrefutable is that defense wins championships..  No matter how sexy the offense is, if your defense is not top 25-50, you do not win championships.  if Venerables was to bring the clemson blue print here to oxford we would do well.  We already have the type of QB they like, we have the WR we need.  We just need a rb that can run and an OL that can block.  Recruiting and coaches fix thtat

Re: Coach Search

Venables would be an interesting hire, for sure. The guy has been a lifelong assistant coach and has always been on winning teams. I'm not sure why I haven't seen his name popping up more often for HC positions.
