Leach's WSU team lost 58-37 to Arizona

...this is a reason I wouldn't be a fan of hiring Leach...his teams will win some games, but he will also deliver some disasters too...I think it's like another poster said, when the air raid offense hums, it looks good but when it falls apart, it falls apart and has an effect on your defense with how long they're on the field

Except for the occasional break away play, the air raid model for Lingo has been a disaster except against lower division schools where he is used to playing.

I think that is the way of these air raid...gimmick offenses....  They beat lesser opponents like a drum and have the wheels come off against strong teams who base their teams on fundamentals ....

I'll be watching the next hire....if it's another proponent of sandlot football then we can expect similar results.  Those offenses work until people figure out how to defense them....then they flop completely.  What you get with those offenses is a hit/miss record....and that doesn't win championships....

Fundamentals are a key.....yesterday I saw one of our DB's run up and hit the Arkie RB behind the LOS for what should have been a loss....but all he did was hit the RB using his shoulder pads and expected the RB to fall down.... The RB bounced off and kept running and our DB was laying on the ground watching him......I mean the DB's arms were NEVER reaching to lock the RB up.....that's a basic fundamental taught in pee wee football......

THIS!!! I cannot understand how something that is preached to them since they first put on pads has gone out the windows. You wrap up around their legs and roll to drop the ball carrier. It's tackling 101. Instead, they think they have to go for the "big hit".

Re: Leach's WSU team lost 58-37 to Arizona

Air Raid offense is like Driver on every tee in golf.  When you catch it right, split the fairway and leave a wedge into the green you look like hero.  Its the other 14 tee shots that contribute to the triple digit score as well as the duffed wedge on approach.
I do like spread offenses and they are a key to our success against Bama.  We don't beat them without it.  I don't think we will ever be able to recruit the same level of athlete they do but we can recruit kids that can runt the spread and force Bama to defend the entire field.  Offense philosophy has not been the issue prior to meathead coming on board.  O Line has been as well as the entire defense being void of talent in so many critical areas we get exposed early and often.  Recruit great athletes for defense and the offense suddenly won't be the focal point as we won't have to outscore everyone else to have a shot at winning.

The old axiom is true...you win championships with defense.

I also remember what my HS coach told my dad...... You put your best athletes on defense.....if you want to win consistently.

No doubt Johnny.  Defense wins championships.  Took Clemson several years to figure that out but guess how they won the NC?  By running Bama's ass silly with a mobile qb and the spread.
Look no farther than who bama has at qb and backup qb as proof.  In my opinion that is largely responsible for their dominance.  The ability to score points has taken some of the stress off their defense where they can really be aggressive and take chances.

Bama's offense is based on a power running game.....it just so happens that they have an extra running back playing QB.....same at state college....They have added a hurry up mode though and that adds an extra dimension.

I just don't care for a spread......it relies on gimicks and tricks.  I think it can win some games but it is a little to hot/cold and has extremes in both directions....if you hit you look like all pro....when you miss you look really, really bad.  It sort of reminds me of basketball which I literally can't stand....never have like it....

Our spread offense served us very well.  We were decent OL play away from 1 definite trip to Atlanta as well as a very likely 2nd trip.

I do think you can still play good D with spread offense so it's not really either/or IMO

Yeah and that's one of the problems I have with a spread.....do you run block or pass block....when you go against an SEC defensive line you'd better know what you're going to do before you go up to the LOS or you're likely to get beat by a fast DT or LB......  Just standing there with your thumb up your rear waiting for the QB to make his reads whether to run or throw makes for a half-assed blocking scheme...
