Ole Miss looking at former 5-Star Alabama OLB transfer Ben Davis
The Ole Miss Rebels have held on to a pair of scholarships for the transfer portal since they inked Maryland MLB Chance Campbell. They didn't sign a linebacker in the high school or juco ranks in the 2021 class. Coach (Lane) Kiffin said at his signing day press conference that he would prefer for those slots to be used for his defense.
"That's why we held a few spots," Kiffin said at his signing day press conference earlier this month. "I think there's going to be some great players come through the portal. That's why we held a few spots. We want to add some difference makers on defense to add to what we already have. When you are down to a couple spots, you want to get great player. I think we would like for them to be defensive players, especially some defensive linemen. We'll see. If there is a great player at a need position, we are going to take him, because that's what big time programs do."
Alabama transfer Ben Davis put his name in the transfer portal on February 15th. Several Ole Miss football coaches, including Lane Kiffin, have started following him on social media. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound native was rated the No. 10 overall prospect in the 2016 class. He looked to be in line for the starting job at edge rusher going into the 2020 season but was beat out by another top 100 prospect in Christopher Allen.
The former 5-Star edge rusher played sparingly in ten games, getting reps on both defense and special teams, accounting for three total tackles. Some other schools that are now following Ben on social media are Oklahoma, Southern Cal, Arkansas, and Miami.

Of course I Lane knows all about the player and was at Alabama when they signed him out of HS. I have been on board for all the transfers up until this point. But I have a few about this potential one.
He has been on campus at Alabama for FIVE years and has not had much if any production. NOW we all know getting caught up in the 2 deep/ 3 deep there is not like about any other school.
Davis had 7 tackles in 24 games in his Alabama career 3 of those on special teams.
reading a little more about the situation, I am pretty sure Saban to told him to move on. They gave him 5 years on scholarship and he got his degree. If not for the rule this year of it not counting on eligibility, he would have been done there. Alabama did their part.
Would he be a upgrade to the players coming back and young guys coming in, does not sound like it. Remember he is a ILB and OM as MD transfer Campbell coming that is also a inside guy.
OM has 2 spots left and I could see them taking other positions of need. The TE deal has not been official from my understanding, the kid from Jax St ( AL) Barry, if that is happening would leave OM with 1 spot.
I would think Kiffin would wait and see if some stud JUCO guy surprises and graduates JUCO so he will be eligible or some kid makes his ACT score or a player decides to transfer at the end of the semester.
If the kid were going to be a soph etc, I think OM 100% goes after him. But now, I pass

Davis does not have impressive stats to have been at Alabama for so long. There are a couple of LBs from Tennessee who are in the portal and were contributors at UT. It seems the UT players would be a better selection for getting a player from the transfer portal.
