Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

The Tom Herman era at the University of Texas is over. The university announced Saturday in a release it was moving on from its head football coach and Horns247 has learned the Longhorns will soon announce Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian as his replacement.

Sarkisian was this season's Broyles Award winner, an honor given to the nation's top assistant, after leading Alabama's offense to a record-setting campaign. Texas won its Alamo Bowl game against Colorado, but that wasn't enough for Herman to keep his job.

Herman was asked after that game what advice he would give himself moving forward in 2021, unsure of his future.

"I don't know. I haven't had a chance to even reflect upon that yet," Herman said. "I think this was unchartered territory for everybody. Hopefully we never have to do it again. "But like I've said before, the time for reflection is after the season when you're not in the middle of preparation, you're not in the middle of a game, or 10 minutes after the game has ended.

"We'll have plenty of time to reflect on things that we did well and things that we need to improve on."

Herman, who was chastised in the aftermath following two questionable fourth-down decisions in the second half that backfired on the Longhorns, was asked about his future following the Longhorns' 23-20 loss to Iowa State, one that ended Big 12 Championship hopes for Texas.

"That's not for me to decide,” Herman. “I feel like where we have the program right now compared to where it was when we took over, the future is very bright. We've won a lot of big games in our time here."

The fourth-year coach has had to answer questions about job speculation throughout the season and on each occasion, tried explaining away the program's positive trajectory.

The Longhorns entered the 2020 season with grand expectations as one of the Big 12's frontrunners, anchored by senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger and a talent-rich roster. But after a 2-0 start pushed Texas to No. 8 in the AP Poll, the Longhorns dropped back to back games to TCU and Oklahoma to fall out of rankings.

Texas won three straight to pull back in the Big 12 Championship race before its disappointing home loss to Iowa State flattened title chances and led to increasing questions about Herman's future as coach.

Herman moved forward with new offensive and defensive coordinators after last season's 8-5 campaign, hoping Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash would help reverse fortunes on the Forty Acres.

The Longhorns have finished inside the Top 10 once during Herman's tenure, climbing to No. 9 to end the 2018 campaign after beating Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.

Texas has fired Tom Herman. Will owe him $15 million and the staff nearly $24 million.

I know it’s been said that Herman had some friction with some boosters but he was supposed to be THE ultimate can’t miss coach when he was hired at Texas.

Re: Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

if it is Sark, Sark after Dark in Austin will be interesting.

hearing the bars are ready for him, the ones where they serve liquor and the ones that keep you locked inside..

After all the issues Vodka Tom had in Austin with his "extra curricular" activities, really surprises me that they would go this route.

Sark not only had issues at Wash and USC, but after he left Bama to go to ATL he had issues in ATL.

Guess we shall see

Re: Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

I would expect some good players to be on the market pretty soon. Texas AD Del Conte did phone/zoom interviews with many in their early signing class and promised Herman would be back to squash the rumors about Urban Meyer to get them to sign.

They are pissed that they were lied to.   I a not very sympathetic to the players if a guy get fired after a couple of years or even after 1 years. At least you got to play for the coach that recruited you for 1 year.  But this case is different, #1 you will not get a chance to play for the coach that recruited you and you had a relationship with for for 2-3 years. #2 the AD flat out lied to you.

Every letter of intent that was signed early should be null and void if a player want out.

Is there a clause in the LOIs stating that the player is signing pertinent to playing for a particular head coach.  If not, then the player should add the clause and have both parties initial and date it in order to make it valid.  Now these players might need to call the Walmart lawyer for legal help!!!

I just don’t see how it’s an upgrade...someone on Twitter said it best - it’s like driving past Chili’s and pulling into Applebee’s parking lot

Sark has a well earned reputation for being an alcoholic. Hope he has gotten help, but the times where he has been drunk during games...

Other than his personal issues, he's not a good HC at all. Really dumb move on UT's part. And I agree that recruits should be released and allowed to sign at other schools without restriction when a HC change is made.

Re: Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

Little post I made on a A&M boardThis was Sark's second stint at Saban rehab. He went to the falcons after his first stint, got back into the same habits he was fired at USC for. ATL sugar coated the reasons for the firing, but the proof was on the field and non putting in the work. Atl fired some other offensive asst at the time, but that is normal as they were bringing in a new OC Dirk Koetter and he brought Mike Mularkey with him to replace the other fired staff member. Saban took him back to rehab him again he had planned for Sark to be a analyst again like the first time he had hired him, but Dan Enos surprisingly left as he was the QB coach at Bama and next in line to be the OC. Enos took the OC job at Miami ( a bad decision as he was fired by Manny Diaz a year later). So Saban sat Sark down in a long interview for the OC job and decided to roll the dice on Sark and himself being able to help Sark keep his person demons at Bay. I have no idea how well Sark will do at Texas, he has been basically a .500 HC at two very traditionally winning programs in Wash and USC. Has been a good OC. But remember he was QB coach at USC when Kiffin was OC in 2005-2006, then a analyst at Bama in 2016 when Kiffin was the OC and Sark was only OC for the one game after Kiffin left for the HCing job at FAU( Sark lost that one game to Clemson in the NAtional Title game). So he doesnt really have a long record of being a OC other than the past 2 years at Bama with the best players in the country. Lets presume he called plays as HC at Washington when he was the HC, that went 34-29. When he returned to USC as HC we know that Clay Helton was his OC and called plays. After Sark was fired in interview after interview Helton and players commented on Helton had been the play caller. The success at USC many people think was Sark but it was Kiffin calling as OC, Same in Sark;s first stop at Bama, it was Kiffin's offense. So we will see at Texas how it will be without the best players in the country and Kiffin;s offense how this will work. Will be interesting to see him on the recruiting road. As a A&M fan, I will take Jimbo Fisher and smile at all the above

Re: Texas fires head coach Tom Herman, hires Steve Sarkisian

Sark might make it three years at Texas.  Of course the longhorn faithful will be complaining next year when he does not go 12-0 and take them to the CFP.

Here is Sark's record as HC:
Washington: 34–29 24–21
USC:            12–6 7–5
Alabama 1–0 1–0 *
* Sarkisian was named interim head coach for a single game during Nick Saban's COVID quarantine

Total: 47–35        .573 Pct.
