George County (Miss.) had a top 100 player on their squad last season in DT McKinnley Jackson. This season they have another highly ranked player in defensive back MJ Daniels. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound defender went from an unranked player to one of the nation's top 247 players in the latest rankings by 247Sports.
"It was amazing learning the news," Daniels said. "It kind of shocked me because the only camps I've been to are Ole Miss'. I didn't think anyone knew about me. It was just an amazing feeling."
The 247Sports scouting team explained why he moved to a 4-Star,
"Has a long, lean frame with good stature," 247sports personnel said. "He's a versatile athlete who has played quarterback and receiver in addition to multiple spots within the secondary. Likely projects as a defensive back at the next level. Has high-level ball skills at defensive back with the ability to come down with the football in 50-50 situations. Moves fluidly and looks to be most comfortable in off-man and zone coverage at this time. Plays corner primarily but also slides over to safety some. Shows good instincts and breaks on the ball, resulting in a high interception total as a junior. Is a talented, coordinated athlete regardless of where he plays. Will need to continue honing his cover skills as he starts to focus exclusively on defense as he can get caught out of phase at times. Projects as a starter at the Power Five level with the ceiling to develop into a NFL Draft pick."
MJ shared what the college recruiters like about him.
"I'm a big guy who can cove the shorter slot guys," Daniels said. "I can stay with the little guys, and I can man up the bigger receivers. They also like the fact that I'm real physical and can support the run game."
The 1st Team All-State selection did a little bit of everything for George County last season. He had over 1,200 yards offense while playing quarterback and receiver. On defense he led his team with seven interceptions and four forced fumbles.
"Everybody likes me at cornerback but Ole Miss. They like me at Star safety. That's their hybrid safety that can come in and play in the box and cover the slots coming out of the backfield. They want me to return kicks too."
MJ committed to Ole Miss early in the recruiting process. The last few months have been hectic on the recruiting front despite the CV 19 virus. He's picked up offers from the likes of Georgia, Texas A&M, Auburn, Mississippi and several more. One more college is getting close to offering as well.
"Coach (Marcus) Woodson for FSU has been hitting me up a lot lately. We started talking about a month ago. I've never been down there before. I plan on checking it out when we can start taking our visits again.
Where else does the 247Sports No. 203 overall rated player want to visit when things open back up?
"I plan on going to Georgia, A&M, Auburn, FSU, and head back to Ole Miss. Oh yea, I'll go check out MSU too."
What made Ole Miss the right fit?
"My first visit there I just feel in love with it. I love the atmosphere around Oxford. It feels like home. I just feel like Ole Miss is the right place for me."
