NCAA may give waivers for ACT/SAT

for class of 2020.

Since the test dates this spring have been cancelled and the summer dates are likely to not happen. Should relieve many kids.Multiple reports Friday indicated that student athletes with spring/summer 2020 graduation dates will be able to enroll for the 2020-21 academic year even if they do not have a qualified SAT or ACT score, provided they meet certain other conditions. John Rothstein of CBS College Basketball (TV) reported that athletes must have a 2.3 GPA and have met core course requirements for admission. Adam Zagoria of the New York Times reported similar details. SAT and ACT dates for March and April have been cancelled, and coaches across the country were worried about athletes who still did not have a qualified test score being able to enroll. Assuming the waiver is administered as reported, it would be quite the relief for college coaches. This is an issue first raised on the second episode of the Barton & Bud Show, a new podcast from 247Sports.

One of the more surprising issues that we have heard in discussions with college coaches is how troublesome the cancellation of dates for standardized tests like the ACT and SAT is becoming."They want to know is the NCAA going to give us a waiver," Elliott asked. "Because all of these testing dates are being wiped out. It's impacting normal students who will be heading to college in 2021, but it is also impacting some of these kids who are going to enroll this summer to play ball in 2020. Some of them do not have qualifying test scores yet. What is the alternative to not giving these kids a waiver if they are not able to get their test taken and passed by the time they enroll? Would they really have the kids go to JUCO or prep? Would they make them take an academic redshirt? This uncertainty is worrying teams who recruit on the academic margins.""It seems they should at least get that initial scholarship counter number back if they are not able to get those guys qualified based on them not being able to take a test in the spring or summer," Simmons said. "There are a lot of complications to this thing and the NCAA is going to have to be more forgiving than ever. I wouldn't want to be in those offices in Indianapolis, that's for sure."
