about Ed Orgeron and his new $45M contract? Most people probably don't know that he took a $200K pay cut to be the HC at Ole Miss - $1 million as DL and associate head coach at USC to $800K at Ole Miss.
Frankly, I'm laughing my ass of at all the douche bags who baited him at every press conference after every game and for those newspapers, led by caulkins at the Memphis rag who ran a story the day after O was hired that dredged up his past. There were bets after every loss on how many minutes into the PC before he blew up. He never did. I was around him quite a bit and I never heard him say a curse word or take a drink. Slick at the Mobile Rag vilified him and talked bad about him every time his name up. Ed asked me why I went to work with Slick and I told him I didn't have a thing to do with it. Orgeron did tell me one time he'd love to meet him because he'd whip his ass. That wouldn't happen now but it sure might have about 10 years ago. During the UT game around 2009, I went over to their side and he gave me a big bear hug.
Ed has clearly matured and learned from his mistakes, most happening at Ole Miss. Key to his success was that he quit trying to be Pete Carroll and started being himself. I knew his major fault - had seen it so many times in the Army - trying to do everything himself and not trusting subordinates to do their job.
I pulled for LSU every game except against Ole Miss and will continue to do so.

Sad that we paid him peanuts and started Luke at around 4 million. I thought, when we hired him, (Luke) that at least we could hire Luke cheap and fire him without costing us much but the GOB's paid him like he was a great hire instead of scraping the bottom of the bucket.
I wish we'd have given Ed one more year and wished it at the time of the firing. He was going to the spread with heavy Freeze influence and would have had a QB in Snead which he never did before then. I believe he would have done well enough for a bowl and maybe even the Cotton Bowl and would have lit up recruiting. We'll never know. Instead we made Nutt's retirement sweet and then Luke's.

Ed deserved one more year at Ole Miss because his recruiting was awesome and his teams played hard. He never had a QB worth starting and when he had one in the pipe (Snead) they fired him before he ever had a chance to use him. I think Ed would have had a break out year the next year and instead we ended up with Nutt's success and complete collapse due to inept recruiting. We would have been much better off having Ed for a while. I never understood the bias against him. I thought he was a good coach.

I think that O should have gotten at least one more year at Ole Miss. Always liked him and am happy for his success. As hard as it was to do, I too pulled for lsu bc of O. But, honestly, the year they had this year was probably the perfect storm with Burrow and their offense that will be hard to duplicate. Having said that, his recruiting is good enough to at least stay near the top if he doesn't build a Saban-esque dynasty.

I agree totally with what all of you have said. Ed was treated like trash almost from the start and we paid Luke like he was Vince Lombardi, Don Shula and Tom Landry all in one.

Ed did not know how to be a HC when at OM. He has since learned the art of valued assistants. His sideline coaching at OM with Werner left much to be desired and cost him his job. But recruiting, that's his forte.

Ed was a friend then and is a friend now. I have taken sh*t for many year by my A&M friends and some OM friends over Ed. the jokes were terrible. I always knew Ed given the second chance and correct situation would be a hell of a HC.
My greatest fear was LSU one day hiring him as HC from a A&M and OM fan. I was just sure LSU wouold always think they were too good and didnt want what they would see as bad pub and never hire him.
If a school and fan base were ever meant for each other, it was them.
I do have that feeling about Kiffin and OM. OM like it or not has had the reputation as a frat boy school. Lane and many know I am friends and love the guy, has a reputation( most of it undeserved) as a patry frat boy. I think it is something the fan base could and should by into and support.
I think A&M and Jimbo have that fit. Jobo a hard working country boy from w virginia. A&M is a conservative school with ROTC/Core?military roots. A working mans school.
Saban and Bam the same, fake, fraud, flash

Rock1, I like your viewpoints. I find myself rooting for him (only when hope leaves OM and you have to side with someone).
I think Ed will always be a good recruiter, but he hangs in the balance of good coordinators - especially OCs. Next year with a reset for LSU, I hope Ed doesn't regress into some of his past OM ways. We'll see how far he has come with no Burrow (Snead).

I think people have given Aranda too much credit for their defense. At LSu they have recruited elite defensive players for the past 20 years. And competent DC should have top 20 defenses' there. Aranda's defensive rankings have fallen each year since his first at LSu when he had a top 10 defense.
They just hired Bo Pelini as DC. Pelini is a arse and I never liked him, but he is a hell of a DC. when he was at LSu, his defenses' were ranked 2005 #3, 2006 #3, 2007 #3.
Aranda may be the second coming of Urban Meyer, but I doubt it. But Pelini is a improvement in my opinion at DC, something they didnt need. Maybe next year a few people A&M and OM included, can whip them. New QB and a ton of early NFL guys and Srs...

I was always an O supporter. But I talked with a player one time years ago that is now a techn recruiter. He said the team had all but burned out with Orgeron. I think nutt just walked into a perfect scenario of players being worn out and he was the passive rah rah friend and they responded. Until nutt got lazy. I wish he would have gotten hired away instead of getting that big raise.
Anyway, O set up up for success but he was not going to be able to keep it up long term unless he was able to change his demeanor. I think the reset he had after ole miss is what he needed to develop.
That and outside usc and LSU, not sure he could do what he did the last 2 years. Happy for him but no longer going to pull for him because he will be a thorn in our side for as long as we face him
