Mike Norvell’s contract details released by FSU

Mike Norvell’s contract details released by FSU

Florida State released the contract details for coach Mike Norvell on Thursday.

The contract is for six years and will pay Norvell $26.5 million through 2025. That's $4.4 million annually, before factoring in an annual retention bonus of $250,000.

Norvell was making $2.6 million in his last season at Memphis.

He'll make $215,000 in annualized sum. The additional compensation, by year, goes as follows:

Year 1 - $3,535,000 (annualized)

Year 2 - $3,785,000

Year 3 - $4,035,000

Year 4 - $4,285,000

Year 5 - $4,785,000

Year 6 - $4,785,000

If you factor in the annual retention bonus, Norvell could make $28 million over six years ($4.6 million per year).

Norvell’s deal with FSU is heavily incentivized:

For an appearance in the ACC Championship, he receives $100,000...or $250,000 if he wins the ACC Championship.
- $100,000 for a bowl appearance OR $200,000 for a NY6 bowl appearance OR $300,000 for a CFP appearance OR $500,000 for a Championship Game appearance OR $800,000 for a National Championship.
- $50,000 for ACC Coach of the Year. $100,000 for National Coach of the Year.
- Up to $200,000 depending on single-year APR score.

FSU's multi-year APR must be 930 or higher for these bonuses to be in play.

The approximate salary pool for FSU's 10 assistant coaches under Norvell is $5,250,000. This does NOT include the salary for support staff like director of operations, strength and conditioning coach, and director of recruiting. To compare, Willie Taggart started with a salary pool of $5,500,000 for assistants...but that figure also included funds towards the aforementioned support-staff roles.

Norvell was officially announced as FSU’s head coach on Sunday. He signed the contract on Saturday, Dec. 7.

The buyout language in the 26-page contract states that IF Norvell were to leave FSU for another coaching job in college or the NFL, he'd owe FSU the following in liquidated damages:

$5,000,000 if termination occurs in Year 1.

$4,000,000 if termination occurs in Year 2.

$3,000,000 if termination occurs in Year 3.

$2,000,000 if termination occurs in Year 4.

$1,000,000 if termination occurs in Year 5.

$0 if termination occurs in Year 6.

FSU would owe Norvell 85 percent of his remaining salary if his contract was terminated without cause at any time.

The deal also includes a $2,000 monthly "vehicle allowance" and relocation/moving expenses of $50,000.

Noles247 has sent in public-records requests for contracts on assistant coaches who have joined Norvell’s staff, and we will provide updates as we receive requests from FSU.

Details for Mike Norvell’s contract at Florida State

Details of Mike Norvell’s contract at Florida State have come to light, according to a few reports this afternoon.

Norvell’s deal with the Seminoles has widely been reported as a 6-year deal, and Steve Berkowitz shares that the contract has a “basic value” of $28 million. Salary for the first year of the deal works out to about $4 million (which includes a retention bonus due every December 31st worth $250k).

At Memphis, Norvell was one of the highest paid Group of Five coaches in college football at $2.66 million per year, per the USA Today Coaches Salary database.

If Norvell were to leave for another college or NFL job, he’d be on the hook for $5 million the first year, and that figure drops by $1 million annually over the life of the contract. If fired without cause, Norvell would be owed 85% of the remaining money left on his deal, subject to duty to mitigate.

Also noted, is that Florida State has agreed to pay the buyout Norvell is owed to Memphis, which is relatively slim in coaching buyout standards at just $500,000.

As for the salary staff pool, Berkowitz notes that Norvell will have a salary pool of about $5.25 million to work with for his 10 on-the-field assistants. That is slightly more than what they were set to allocate for Willie Taggart’s staff this next fall, which was $5.1 million.
