Apparently Luke will get his fourth season

It is being reported that apparently the Ole Miss staff buyout is too much debt (12 million +) to consider in dismissing Luke and company. It appears we will have more of this circus next year regardless of the final outcome to the season.

Re: Apparently Luke will get his fourth season

Luke and his cronies have ruined Ole Miss football.  They only care about themselves, their access, and feeling important.  Realistic Ole Miss fans might as well face the facts, that as long as the political machine of GOBs are in control, Ole Miss will most likely never be a threat or a champion.  Ole Miss will reel in mediocrity and be fortunate to have break even seasons.

The Rebels will be regular cellar dwellers in the SEC and become a punching bag for the other SEC teams.  This is unfortunate because there is potential in Oxford, but the elitists want to have control and be the important ones in the program.  Well, these few important people will be able to enjoy run of the stadium when it is mostly empty with very few fans attending games.

Who is reporting that? I can't help but think they'll lose more than that by keeping him. That'll make me give up completely on the program.

Re: Apparently Luke will get his fourth season

Seeing it on football scoop. If that does turn out to be true, I am 100% done with Ole Miss football. I just sent a very lengthy email to Keith Carter, and I encourage everyone to do the same.

If the excuse being given is accurate, what happens when MM leaves to Vanderbilt's HC job and Luke hires another DC? Just gonna use the same excuse after that?

Man, I feel sick...

Re: Apparently Luke will get his fourth season

nothing in the world would have changed this. For what ever reason, the decision has been made to concrete Luke in place for at least 4 years.  The first 2 (interim/year one),  were to allow time get the ncaa stink washed off.  now we are in the "rebuilding" stage.  what can be debated is the rebuilding part.  yes the D has gotten so much better, but the offense took a huge step backwards.  We should have kept longo.  yes he was inconsistent but he at least had a 1000 yard rusher and still threw the ball.  If we had longo, i believe we would have been at least, more exciting and in fact, I think we would have won 2-3 more games if we had even a tad more offense.

The issue is now we may be losing a handful of current players that were highly rated and it is because our offense is not being productive.  Luke has not cratered the program, but he is not moving it forward as a whole.  now I am not going to ignore the fact our offense lost a major load of talent at QB, LT, 3 WR, a TE and other OL.  That was never going to be replaced, but again, this is part of being the coach.  Plus, people want to give luke a wholesale pass on the current issues.  But they never want to acknowledge the fact that luke is not a new coach.  he has been here for a decade.  He was on the staff during most of the issues that got us in trouble with the NCAA, coaching the LT that kept the ncaa here.

Point is, Luke is here.  He is being given a lot of rope and it will be up to him as to what he can do with it.  He will either pull our program up or he will hang himself with it.  My fear is he will get us back to the perpetual 6 win type program and that is not going to cut it.  But you will have a load of people who hang on the fact he is getting those 6 wins "the right way".  So I have basically stopped interacting with the luke defenders because all it does is ingrain their support and circle the wagons.  I plan on going into hibernation for a bit.  Let all this stuff shake out because there is nothing I am going to do to affect any change.

If Ole Miss makes another hire, then to get anyone decent they will have to give a 3 year contract with a comfortable termination clause.  These coaches are making big bucks to get fired from their jobs!!!  I guess I should have gone into coaching.  Since I don't know much about it and I love(d) Ole Miss, I could have a chance at being a head coach there.  I could get a cushy contract, work a couple of seasons, get fired, and then retire from the 2 years salary plus the termination clause.  Of course I would have Jimmy Sexton negotiate everything!!!

Update on Matt Luke and Ole Miss

Barring an unexpected change of events, Matt Luke is expected to return for a fourth season as Ole Miss’s head coach in 2020, sources have told FootballScoop.

Ole Miss is conducting interviews for find its next athletics director — Ross Bjork left for Texas A&M over the summer — and university leadership is stressing to candidates that retaining Luke for the 2020 campaign is in the best interests of the University, sources said. Ole Miss, sources tell FootballScoop, is quite far along in their process to hire their next AD.

Luke, a former Rebels center who coached for his alma mater as a grad assistant, a position coach and co-coordinator, was promoted to interim head coach when Hugh Freeze resigned in the summer of 2017. Luke went 6-6 as a long-term interim — the Rebels were serving a bowl ban as part of NCAA sanctions from the Freeze era — and was retained as the program’s full-time head coach after that season.

Ole Miss went 5-7 in 2018 and today stands at 4-6 overall, 2-4 in SEC play.

In three seasons, Ole Miss is 6-16 in SEC play under Luke — the Rebels close with No. 1 LSU and the Egg Bowl — which, under normal circumstances, would equal a coaching change in the SEC.

However, Luke’s contract would place his buyout around $6.5 million and, when combined with the contracts of offensive coordinator Rich Rodriguez and defensive coordinator Mike MacIntyre, would push the cost of dismissing Luke well north of $12 million. University leadership has told AD candidates that is too much for the university to bear at this time.

When adding that cost to the fraught situation of throwing a newly-hired AD directly into a coaching search, it’s clear why the Ole Miss brass is insisting on giving Luke the 2020 season and letting the new AD get settled in Oxford before undergoing a coaching search next winter, if necessary.

As always, stay tuned to The Scoop for the latest.

Re: Apparently Luke will get his fourth season

This part of the article is very disturbing:

It shows that Luke and his family are circling the wagons. They are using political favors to keep Luke in power.  Luke knows he is a sorry coach, but just won't admit it.  His political machines and all their cronies are doing their best to keep Luke as head football coach at Ole Miss.  Meanwhile, other teams pass the Rebels and the fans suffer knowing the ineptness displayed by Ole Miss.
