I love Shea. He's a great kid and I hope things look up for him and the team, but he honestly needs more grit. I don't see the toughness and determination that I witnessed in Chad Kelly. Maybe he's still just young and needs to mature more.

Well..... I see more deer in the headlights when he gets heavy pressure....I think that's due to lack of experience....that was his first start against Alabama so he's on a huge learning curve.  Plus he is literally running for his life on most every play..

I say that might be what you're seeing because I saw something last night that told me that he has plenty grit.  On an interception he was going over to try to make the tackle and a linebacker went to block him....Shea bowed up and knocked that block off; giving as good as the got....THEN he made the tackle and knocked the DB out of bounds....determined not to let that guy get by him.... That takes some stones for a QB to do that...

Re: Patterson is just not that good

We didn't see Chad at this point in his career.  Give Shea some time (as the OL should be doing).

Re: Patterson is just not that good

shea is getting killed but he is not being prepared for the issues that other teams throw at him.

Matt Luke is the issue. I love him to death as an Ole Miss guy, but his OL has sucked complete ass every year he has been here.   He was been the running game coordinator and we have had zero running game

I know he may be trying hard and all, but he needs to reevaluate pretty much everything

He's never even been a coordinator much less HC....talk about jumping in water over your head.  I don't think he has the experience to reevaluate.  He looks to pretty much  be just going with the hand he was dealt.  He is, in effect, a place holder because, let's face it, there was NO WAY we could find an experienced coach to step in 2 weeks before fall practice started.  I think 'treading water' is the most we can hope for....because it sure beats drowning.....

Shea was thrown to the wolves beginning with Freeze's bad decision to start him against TAMU.  During that game against TAMU, Shea had a stellar performance and Ole Miss won the game.  Then in the next two weeks, Ole Miss was beaten badly by both Vanderbilt and Moo U.  As a result of Freeze's hasty decision, Shea lost a year of playing while only appearing in three games, two of which were losses.

The Freeze fires Werner, who is an excellent developer of QBs, Freeze hires Longo, who runs a gimmicky offense that will not work in the SEC, and then Freeze abruptly resigns amid a scandal at Ole Miss.  Now Shea is left with an OL that does not know how to block, no RBs to compliment the passing game, an OC with a horrible offensive scheme, and a HC who could not even develop an OL in six seasons.

There is no doubt that Shea Patterson is a very talented QB, but he needs players, an offensive scheme, and a coach to develop him in order for him to be more successful.  When the NCAA penalties are given to Ole Miss, it would not be surprising to see Patterson transfer to a better program, especially if he does not have to sit out a year.

Re: Patterson is just not that good

Maybe you are right and this thread is unwarranted but he is lacking fundamentals that a good QB coach would be able to sort out. That hasn't happened and he is running for his life due to our complete absence of an offensive line. This is more of a coaching issue than a talent issue. The kid has the talent but none of the refinement.

Well....I agree.  Sandlot football is, by definition, unorganized.  Organized QB play would demand teaching of QB fundamentals....In this sandlot crapshoot it's mostly run around and try to buy time and play gunslinger, flip the ball any way you have to....underhand...between the legs....whatever....

Organized play you have to do the basics correctly....drop back....throw over the shoulder....read and run through progressions..... I see NONE of that in this offense....

To think a defense is going to just stand there while the QB waits for a receiver to 'find open field' is beyond dumb.  Heck I could run through the gaps our OL gives away.... I was amazed that after the first time we motioned our back  to a no back set and Shea got mauled that we would do it a second time much less repeatedly..... What part of keep a back in to block is hard to understand?  Pure incompetence is the only thing I can come up with to explain it...

What pisses me off is this - these guys are getting paid a hell of a lot of money to make such stupid decisions. There are highschool coaching staffs out there that are better than what we have at Ole Miss right now.

Re: Patterson is just not that good

Johnny, you may very well be right. I was referring to CAL game also. I do think coaching (or lack thereof) is a huge part of our problems. We should have a talented offensive line according to all reports. Our running game did look a little better against AL, but you wouldn't have noticed... the overall game plan never capitalized off of that success...

Re: Patterson is just not that good

Patterson is still one of the top QB's in the country.  What we are seeing is a total lack of confidence in his line to block for him.  You guys remember Jevan Snead's final season and how different he was from the previous year?  Chad Kelly wasn't the same last year as the year previous.  When you have zero trust in your guys up front to protect you it gets in your head and rattles you.   Now add in that Patterson is a true sophomore that has played in a total of 7 games.
His fundamentals are as sound as any you will find however he can't use them since he's running for his life at the snap.  He's got 2 seconds tops before he's got to scramble or get hit.  That's pathetic but is the reality of what he's facing every single snap.
His accuracy is as good as any I have ever seen for his age.  Absolutely incredible.  Again accuracy is affected greatly when rhythm gets thrown off, rush lanes are full of guys ready to knock his ass off, etc.
Just my opinion.  We got 99 problems but Shea ain't one...
